Had Masala Dosa and Bisibele Bath which was piping hot. Authentic in taste. Could have been slightly less pricier but still good food nevertheless.

the food is actually SO good, this might be my favorite indian spot in nyc. my mom always wants to eat here when she visits. 10/10
Delicious food! Cozy, chill atmosphere.
I absolutely love this place.
For HOW much quality Indian food is in NYC Ananda is a disappointment. The food was very bland and there seemed to be a miscommunication as to whether or not a dish came with chillies (we were told yes but when it came it out was a floppy bland pancake). We were offered to order something else (which was nice) but returned the dish. I don't expect a fully comped meal at all but a discount would have been nice. My friend was very hungry and still found the food not tasty.
TLDR: bland food in NYC that has top Indian food, service wasn't great.

Never go to this restaurant!Zero Star!
Disclaimer-This restaurant was never our first option, we were going to a different restaurant initially but that was closing n we were super hungry so we find the next closest restaurant.
We ordered pav bhaji n could instantly taste bad oil use in it.. For main course we got daal n kofta..with Chapati, Roti n whole wheat parantha..As soon as the food came we could see all the breads were frozen! They were like papad ..so so bad ..We pay 75 dollars for eating frozen food.
My husband told the owner once that this is not whole wheat parantha..he listened n didn’t say anything..next when we went to counter to pay my husband said that you are serving frozen food ..he was not even considerate of feedback..my husband got annoyed n said Stop n that guy started shouting..he didn’t even consider we were their with our 71 year old father n a kid..he was literally shouting n start ponding on the table..the Guy was so rude n ill mannered..They are spoiling the name of Indian food in foreign country..please never ever go to this place.
The food was horrible, the person was the worst n his attitude was tremendously rude.
Attaching the picture of the person who was shouting ! The place certainly needs to be audited for quality

We loved this place while visiting NYC. The server plugged my phone in to charge while we ate and was very friendly. The Biryani was AMAZING! I will definitely visit again if in the city. I dream about that Biryani and I want to try the Korma.

Terrible service overshadowed any enjoyment from the food
We were looking forward to trying Ananda, but our experience was deeply disappointing and echoed many of the negative reviews we wish we had taken more seriously beforehand.
We came in as a group of seven and were met with immediate attitude from the manager and server, who asked if we had a reservation — despite the restaurant being practically empty (only about five people seated). It was shocking to be questioned about reservations in such a quiet space.
Our order included a mix of South and North Indian items: vada pav, batata vada, two dosas, mattar paneer, dal makhni, naan, and the South Indian thali. One of the kids with us accidentally mentioned tomato soup, which the server wrote down. Upon reviewing the order, we clarified and asked for it to be removed. Later, the kid decided they did want it after all, and we politely requested to add it. Instead of a simple yes or no, the manager stormed out to inform us that they do not allow changes once the order is finalized, claiming that additional orders in between “mess up” their kitchen flow. He was unnecessarily rude and condescending, making us feel unwelcome on our first visit. If such a strict policy exists, it should be clearly communicated before ordering—not enforced mid-meal with hostility.
To add to the poor experience, our waitress was suddenly swapped midway through service. The new waiter was much more attentive, possibly because they realized we were upset, but by then, the tone had been set.
Food-wise, some dishes were good, but portion sizes—especially for the mattar paneer and dal makhni—were very small for the price. The $25 South Indian thali arrived late, just 15 minutes before we were ready to leave, and worse, the kootu tasted spoiled. We were already disheartened by the service and didn’t want to escalate things further.
The total bill was $178, which felt unreasonable considering the poor hospitality, limited portions, and quality concerns. In comparison to other Indian restaurants in NYC, this felt overpriced and deeply underwhelming. We’ve dined at many other places where the staff actively check on diners, ask if more food is needed, and offer dessert or chai at the end of the meal. That’s standard. Here, there was none of that warmth.
After reading more reviews post-visit, it’s clear our experience wasn’t unique. Many others have faced similar hostility from the manager, including being yelled at, overcharged, or treated with blatant disrespect. It's appalling how consistently poor the customer service appears to be.
The food alone can’t save a restaurant where the service makes you feel like an inconvenience. We won’t be returning and recommend others avoid this place unless they enjoy being treated poorly for a premium price.
