B & H Dairy opened in 1938 and has been serving consistently delicious Eastern European comfort food ever since. Itâs a vintage style, dairy kosher vegetarian lunch counter thatâs open late. This place has been a favorite of mine for the last 17 years.
I love the mushroom and sauerkraut pierogis. They are stuffed so full of well-seasoned sauerkraut and mushroom, you wonât believe they stayed together, but they always do. Pierogis come fried or boiled and with cheese, potato, or spinach and feta. They are served with sour cream or grilled onions - pay the extra $1.50 and get them both.
The borscht (usually served hot or cold) is perfectly balanced - sweet, sour, earthy. All the soup is great, really.
The challah has crispy edges and is fluffy in the center - slightly sweet, rich and just the right amount of salt, best served warm with butter. If you take it home, make sure to warm it up in the oven.
The stuffed cabbage is Eastern European comfort food at its best. The filling has a deep flavor, topped with tomato sauce that is both slightly bitter and sweet.
Finish your meal with a blintze - my favorite is cherry.
I recommend eating in because the environment is fun, relaxed, and everything is better hot off the grille. They have a few tables outside, as well. The place is small, so if thereâs not a seat, take out is still amazing - see photos.
They always have daily specials and a fresh juice bar. While itâs listed as a vegetarian place, you will find fish on the menu that is clearly labeled.

Got the tuna cheese melt with borscht soup. Really enjoyed the soup but the tuna melt was very soggy and felt unseasoned. The challah also did not taste as flavorful as I hoped it would.

This Kosher dairy diner serves all vegetarian and fish dishes.
The perogies and knishes are very good. The borscht and vegetable soup are delicious.
The french toast is a nice treat.
The only thing here I ever disliked was the mac & cheese. It was flavorless and the macaroni was so soggy, it was softer than the cheese, and resembled glue paste.
It seems like it was sitting in a pot from noon until night.
Other than that, the food is excellent diner food, although not as cheap as I remembered.

Support N.Y.C. storefronts. This place is special. Their soups are the best. Sitting at this counter on a cozy Monday morning at the crack of dawn is the best start to the week.
Love the sign that says âno guns / no phonesâ lol. I guess a lot of people did because that made it info a hat.

Last visit was five years ago, but ate here often when I lived in NYC. Counter and a few two seat tables but the dairy food is marvelous.

Food is not bad, but there's nothing to do with the Jewish food. Khala was cold.
