Homey ambience. Smiling service. Flowing wine (if you get the pairing.
By any regular metric, this is a 5/5. Unfortunately, this is New York. More unfortunately, they have a Michelin star. Thus, they must be judged within the strata in which they belong.
The ingredients were FRESH. This is their calling card. The carrots, the squash, the beets, the buckwheat. Kudos to their souring.
The meal is an imbalanced (to me and my table). We were craving protein, and this place highlights the produce. I will say the tastiest dish was a non meat course (mushrooms in a dashi broth)
Not top of my list, but massive respect to what they serve and what they represent.

Flawless service from front of house to the entire experience. Lots of food, large portions clean, and great quality, creative yet tasty, vegetable forward, exactly what I was hoping for starting off the year.

One of our favorite restaurants in NYC. Food serves family style and the ingredients are always fresh and delicious. No menu to choose from, less headache for me.

Underwhelming.
I took my family, 5 of us in total, for dinner tonight. We all had an amazing evening. The food was fab and varied, the service outstanding. I liked the balance of food types, textures, and flavors. The family compared notes after and we all especially loved an appetizer, the Hakurei Turnip and Radish with creme fraiche and buckwheat. I also love the radicchio entree salad.
All dishes were delivered simultaneously to our table, by multiple wait staff. There was ample time between courses.
We had one vegetarian in our group and two others had minor food restrictions. All were handled gracefully.
The setting is low key in a good way. Even though almost all tables were occupied, it was quiet.

Easily one of the best dinner experiences I’ve ever had. The food is beautifully presented, in a timely way, and tastes outstanding. The service was excellent. Cannot recommend this restaurant enough. We had no dietary restrictions in our party, but the table next to us had a vegetarian menu and it looked just as amazing!

Watch the Chef's Table Dan Barber ep before you come here. The narrative makes the experience that much richer.

Honestly words can’t explain the experience, everything was perfect! The food, the service, and the atmosphere were top notch and well curated. The family style was extremely unique, with ingredients I’ve never or rarely seen in other restaurants. Bonus points for a very interesting wine pairing throughout the meal. The atmosphere is very cozy and welcoming, honestly perfect for a special date, a business meeting, or catching up with friends and family.
