Cherry Gourmet Deli is not far from my apartment. I saw the reviews on Yelp. When I saw "Mariano makes the best Chopped Cheese Sandwich" I knew I had to go try one. Besides everyone said the employees are friendly. I used to stop in here years ago to grab a snack or water and go. First thing I had a problem getting inside because I didn't realize you push the door IN to go inside. There's no handle and it didn't slide open. D*** me, a customer had to open the door for me. As soon as I walked in there was a smiling man behind the counter. I said I heard Mariano makes the best Chopped Cheese and I asked if he was Mariano. He said yes and I told him I wanted mine without tomato. He was smart asking me if I wanted a roll or hero. I prefer the roll and his rolls are huge. I enjoyed the sandwich but didn't eat some of the bread. It was just too much. This sandwich had more beef than the others I've had recently. It had lettuce and onions and plenty of Mayo. I don't understand why these sandwiches are called Chopped Cheese. This one was lacking in cheese to me. It was more of a Chopped Beef Sandwich. I will say by the time I walked home to eat it was still hot. It was well wrapped in tinfoil and put in a bag for me to easily carry. The second problem I had was with a customer that I thought was off. She was giving me a hard time for just standing there. I said I was waiting for him to make my sandwich. Poor guy was all alone doing the cooking and running the check out. People kept coming in to buy groceries and drinks. I swear a couple young men left without paying because they saw he was busy and couldn't see them. I'm giving Cherry Gourmet three stars. Maybe it's me but I think I'm finally over the Chopped Cheese Sandwich. The cook was so nice this is hard to review negatively. I just think the rest of the atmosphere will keep me away.

Sometimes I like to give out stars not just based on the business, but for my personal experience with the staff.I dropped in for a cup of tea recently on a cold morning. It's a basic bodega like you'll find all throughout the area. Nothing all that unique or special from the others.Yet, the man at the counter and I had a really nice conversation. He was super friendly and we chatted about a bunch of things. Like old friends. This kind of human warmth and pleasantries will always have me coming back. I find that missing with many people nowadays, and we need more of it.I wasn't in a rush so I hung for a while and it was a worthwhile way to spend some time.
