Don't you hate walking into a nice looking bistro with a great atmosphere, only to find out the food is mediocre and the service is unbelievably bad. I know I do! Do yourself a favor and go to one of the plethora of really good French Bistros in Manhattan. Stay far far away from this one.

I was very disappointed by Chez Francis. We were seated on time, but for some reason the hostess offered to check my coat but not my companion's. It was fairly empty on a Saturday evening, so I was surprised when it took half an hour for the waitstaff to take our order. I ordered the onion soup, which I was very excited to try, but it never arrived (!). The food was tasty, nothing special, and definitely overpriced for the quality and portions. The wine list is fairly small. There is better French food in New York, at a better price, with better service.

We went for dinner on Valentines Day so I can only speak to the menu on that day.
There was a pre-set menu, which we were not made aware of beforehand. We had been very excited to try things on the menu, but were told that we did not have that choice. There were only two things on the menu per course, and we had to order all 3 courses for $105 per person which was more than we had anticipated to spend (the price wasn’t the main issue, but it was a surprise). There was no other option. I was upset but we stayed anyway hoping the food would be good. We chose to have one of each item as there were two of us.
Unfortunately, it was truly one of the worst meals I’ve ever had. I couldn’t even finish one scallop, and mostly just ate bread and butter. I was told the filet mignon came medium well which I accepted, but it came medium rare which I do not care for. My boyfriend does like meat at that temperature and even he said it was not good. The burrata was alright, but the tuna tartar wasn’t very good (I’ve heard good things about it so maybe this was just the quality of that night.) Even the soufflé was bad, which was a surprise as I thought at least that would be good.
I did politely tell the host on the way out that we were disappointed with the meal and not being made aware of the pre-set menu, but didn’t make a huge fuss as we just wanted to leave. I made the reservation a month in advance, and had I known there was a pre-set menu I would have cancelled and just come back on a different day. We didn’t even go anywhere afterwards. We were so upset we just went home, which is unfortunate because we walked in so happy and excited to spend this special day there. To be honest I was kind of on the verge of tears by the end (sorry to be dramatic haha, but it was just such a gut punch on what was supposed to be a special day.) It completely ruined our Valentines experience.
