I saw a sea of five-star reviews as I went to write mine, and I have to ask: What are you all smoking (and can I have some)?

Cloves is mid, at best.

It's neither unique enough to compete with the Gazabs, Semmas or even Tamarinds of NYC, nor is it cheap enough to belong to the average-but-affordable category. It falls squarely in the mediocre middle.

The menu is mostly generic, par-for-the-course, pan-Indian offerings--boring, watered down stuff that Westerners (who will never actually visit India) love.

The only standout item for me was the Salmon Tikka Jafrezi, which featured nicely tender cuts of salmon in a spiced, stir-fry medley with vegetables. Get this.

WARNING: The reason for my low rating is not because of the food. It's because of the scummy, scammy way we were billed. They automatically added a 20% gratuity to to our bill, yet still left space for a tip--AND DIDN'T SAY ANYTHING ABOUT THE ADDED GRATUITY. I don't have a problem with restaurants adding automatic tips, but they'll make a point to mention it at some point during your meal. Cloves' staff deliberately stayed mum. This was proven when we confronted the staff, and the manager tried to play dumb for a while before finally admitting to being aware of the added gratuity and claiming it was a system issue. When we pointed out that that didn't explain why the staff didn't say anything, he just mumbled something about looking into it.

Wonder if that extra gratuity they've sneakily collected is paying for all these five-star reviews?

Great quality indian food; we had lamb rogan josh, paneer tikka masala, and butter chicken, all really great. One of the only Indian restaurants I’ve been to where the protein actually matches up to the curry. Impeccable service as well!

The first time I visited with my girlfriend I was welcomed and the food was great. The second time I went alone and was shunned. I was told the restaurant had closed but am sure I was turned away due to homophobia and discrimination. Again, I truly believe the food is great, and the service is fine as long as you do not belong to a minority that is not Indian immigrant. For this reason I will not be returning, it simply is not worth it.

Warning- surprise fee scam!

The food itself was relatively good for Indian food in the city.

I’m writing this review because the restaurant added a surprise charge of just under 20% to our party of 4. They did not mention this charge, nor was it on the menu. Even worse, it didn’t show on the receipt to sign, and they had the audacity to ask for tip on the total already including this surcharge.

We will not be back, and if you go here, factor in an additional 20% surprise bill.

The best Indian food I’ve ever had in my life. I have brought my whole crew of friends and family, and each one of them can’t stop talking about this place. The food is beyond flavorful and has gorgeous presentation. I would come back here in a heartbeat, always and forever.

***ATTENTION TO ANYONE WITH ALLERGIES*** This restaurant does not take the health and safety of its customers seriously. As someone with a nut allergy, we asked 3 SEPARATE times if any food in our order had nuts in it. The first time the waiter said probably not but he’d go check (he never came back). The second time a different waiter said that EVERYTHING had nuts, which sounded odd so we asked she go to the kitchen and double check. The third time the waiter came back and said NOTHING had nuts. After checking for the 3rd time, we proceeded to eat our meal. As we are eating our meal, suddenly the first waiter comes back and says the paneer has “only some” nuts. When asked if the restaurant has an Epi-Pen, the waiter was confused and later came back to say they do not have one. We had to run across the street to grab a Benadryl to treat the allergic reaction. This was an awful experience and the worst part is that that the restaurant was completely negligent and did not take food allergies (which are severe and sometimes life-threatening) seriously. This is UNACCEPTABLE and DANGEROUS

Poor food, decent service.
Tried the butter chicken and garlic naan, what could go wrong. Chicken was over cooked, naan was burnt.
Masala chai was the most stale but hot.
Service was decent.
Always check your bill, I was over charged for the chai. It got corrected when I pointed out.

Did not keep up to expectations of 4.9 star.
