Darbar is an absolute gem. Food is fantastic & incredibly authentic (not to mention the best prices for indian food in NYC!) Do yourself a favor and get the Chicken 65 — be warned, it is a (spicy) explosion of flavor on your tastebuds. The classics like vindaloo & tikka go hardddd and “lesser known” dishes (ie by the white americans ;) ) like balchao, chana saag, etc. are wondrous. Service is kind, attentive, and very helpful. Truly cannot beat this place for date night, friends/family dinner, work gathering (private room upstairs too!), or even a solo experience.

Staff is super polite and nice, seating is comfortable, prices maybe a bit high but probably normal for the area. I got food to go last night but haven’t tried it yet so will need to update the review after that. I personally didn’t love the mango margarita, it was too sweet and didn’t seem very strong.

this restaurant is a gem that I had never gone to before last night , right in our mid town neighborhood. Our friend wanted Indian food and I had walked by a million times so decided to check it out. It was a wonderful experience between the delicious food, and the fantastic service. They're helpful in ordering and I have to say prompt with the food! I will definitely be going back and ordering take out from Darbar. A big recommendation for this restaurant.

Nice ambiance. Great service. Excellent food from the appetizers to desserts. The pictures don't do it justice, but everything was delicious.

We stopped in for lunch and both had the buffet. This place as a very friendly vibe about it. They had a very large selection of dishes at the buffet and like I always do I tried and sample as many as I could. I can say I did not have one thing that I did not love! The naan bread stands out for me. They do have the option to order off the menu if you rather do that.

What differentiates "fine" dining from the ordinary? We walk by this place frequently. On our way back from a matinee we decided to try it. The awning says it's "fine Indian food," or maybe "...dining" but either way, hence my opening question. We were there a bit after 5 on a frigid Tuesday, they were empty except for one guy sitting at the rather well-stocked bar. Had our choice of tables. We were given menus and asked for our water choice. When I closed my menu, the gentleman came over and asked if we were ready to order. After we ordered I asked where the restroom was, and perhaps this is a negative if someone is handicapped (though I didn't ask) because it's upstairs. When I came back, there were small plates and a basket of papadum with the usual tamarind and cilantro (?) sauces. The green one was less watery than others I've had. We decided to share an appetizer and a soup. I asked for a hot mulligatawny soup and it came steaming hot in a bowl that looked like a small inverted sombrero, deceptively deeper than it seemed and the soup was excellent! Our appetizer was bhel puri, and it was also excellent and tasted freshly made. It was larger serving than the typical one we've had at other places. Couldn't wait for the entrées! Husband chose the EggplantBharta and I chose the Beetroot Malai Kofta; both were listed as house specialties. After we'd finished our soup and bhel puri, our plates were cleared quickly. Before the main dishes came, the waiter asked if he could take the small plates to make room on the table; he came with warmed plates, set one in front of each of us with the name Darbar printed on the (top) edge and facing so as to be perfectly aligned to the eye. A classy touch! Our entrées each came in a triangular dish, with one large oval bowl of rice with peas for the two of us. I've had the eggplant bharta, usually written as "baigan bharta" on a menu. It never looked like this, and perhaps it's just a regional difference in the recipe but this was very flavorful, not swimming in oil, and spiced nicely. I had never eaten beetroot malai kofta. They look like beet falafel that I've recently eaten in a Lebanese restaurant, except not at all crunchy, or like small-to-medium size meatballs. Served in a creamy mustard-yellow sauce, there were 5 of them. I couldn't resist spooning up and then using the roti we had ordered to mop up any sauce that I hadn't spooned already over my rice and kofta. SO good! The only other people who came in as we ate were a party of 8 who sat in back as they celebrated someone's birthday. They had had been there before from what I could overhear. We passed on dessert, but we will definitely return! If you happen to be in midtown east and you like Indian food, we highly recommend Darbar!
