I have lived in nyc for 4 years. This is the worst meal I have ever had. I will say, the clams were pretty good. But, the French onion soup was a pot of oil. The lobster bisque was a pot of cream with chunks of lobster (bit a shell in two bites). The T bone steak was grey and then purple on the inside. I love medium rare but this was well done and then rare with no sear. Lastly, the pasta was a joke. I could’ve cooked better pasta with goodles and the sauce was just tomatoes. We could’ve ordered poorly but we asked the waiter for help and he was of no help. If you want white table clothes, old Italian vibes and bad food. This is the spot for you. But, if you enjoy resteraunts with good food. I recommend you go somewhere else. But, if you do go, at least get the clams.

I am giving this place five stars not because it will blow you away with its creative take on Italian American cuisine. It won't. But for an old fashioned Italian American New York style meal you can't ask for much more than what you'll get at Gene's. From the old New York atmosphere, to the white table cloths, to the expertly made cocktails, to the efficient service to the rarely seen anymore relish tray this place gives you a sense of what New York was like fifty years ago. Very good ceasar salad and chicken parm. Excellent chocolate mousse for dessert. This is a must try nyc experience.
