We stayed at Gray’s Papaya and loved it! We got 3 hot dogs with soda for 11.50 USD, really a bargain for New York. The sandwiches were great: well-grilled sausage, warm bread and tasty toppings — some homemade, much better than those at classic roadside kiosks. The place is simple and fast, perfect for a tasty snack without spending too much. Try the famous papaya drink, symbol of the place. In a nutshell: authentic, cheap and delicious, one of those historic places that absolutely deserve a stop in Manhattan!
It's cheap, and we'd love to, but there's nothing extraordinary about the quality or presentation of the place that is chilling from a hygienic point of view
Small room without seating with standing tables. Spartan Service with continuous hot dogs that are really exquisite. You order the hot dog, choose what to dress it with, the drink (great papaya) and then pay. Prices are low and worth it.
I’ve waited years to go here and I can tell you it was definitely worth the wait. The best hotdog I’ve ever eaten. Walked all the way from Midtown and it was worth the walk. You can’t beat the prices.
A typical New York panchito, the combo with the soda is good price. It doesn't have much Mood but it's classic and doesn't miss. I recommend
Really super recommended, small but super good hot dogs. I don't feel like recommending chilli. Top price, metro in front of the room
Hot dog was spicy and good. Service was quick. They had a huge line for a free hot dog promotion that day (July 4th), but when I said we weren’t interested in getting a free hot dog and we wanted to pay, they told us to get out of line and go inside so that was nice. I didn’t care for the papaya drink as it’s very sweet. My husband loved it (we only got one). And the hot dogs itself was flavorful. I didn’t like the onion sauce. It was too sweet. I’d have preferred raw onions.
Much expectation but unfortunate visit. For me this place is overrated, acceptable taste, dirty place, dirty tables and should be cleaned by the client if you do not want to eat next to the trash. I don't recommend it.
Ok snack fast food on the go, hotdogs on small side, was ok snack but if in area go Billy's stall instead, review rating generous
Finally visited this NYC institution. I ordered the classic hot dog with onions, sauerkraut, and mustard. The hot dogs were perfectly cooked on the griddle and served on a warm bun, unlike the typical NYC street cart dogs, which are usually boiled. They weren’t overly salty but still packed with flavor, and I appreciated not feeling thirsty after eating two. Prices were reasonable by city standards, making this a solid value for a quick, affordable bite.

Great! The day before, I had eaten a hot dog at Shake Shack and I was already conquered... but Gray’s Papaya is something else! Simple, efficient, super good! bread, sausage, toppings, everything is perfectly balanced. It’s the kind of New York snack you can understand from the first bite. Plus, it’s fast and affordable. Frankly, a real crush!
I don't think they're the best hot dogs in New York as everyone says. Try it, but maybe it gets better. The meat is delicious but the dressing did not convince me. The menu is a bit confusing.
Excellent hot-dog, the best we have eaten in the city. The sausage is really tasty and not fatty at all. I loved a regular plain one with ketchup but the best is the one with chilli. Don’t forget to try the extraordinary papaya drink! Fair price, great location it was well worth a try.
ZERO REVIEW.

I've been to GRAY'S Papaya for at least 40 years at 72nd Street Broadway. Been going there with my mom, sister and godfather since I was at least 10 years old. Always buying hotdogs and a drink. Flash forward 2025 I'm 59 years old. I never bought breakfast there. So after working an overnight shift I decided try breakfast at GRAY'S. I came in and stood behind a customer in front of me at 8:05am. To my surprise and disappointment, Some 20+ takes the order of someone just walking in. I tell him how I was amazed that he skipped me. He didn't apologize, he just was rude. Saying should he take my order or, take the next customer. So I walked out, I bought breakfast from a nearby vendors food cart. After patronizing GRAY'S for 40 years today's attempted breakfast there was very disappointing. I'll be letting my friends & colleagues about it. I deserve better treatment than that.
GRAY'S should make sure their employees treat the customer right and address them properly. No breakfast recommendation from me. I shouldn't have to ask for an apology it should've been given automatically. He should ask himself, if someone did what he did to me, how he would like it. I'm sure he would complain about the customer service.
