Would not recommend it for those looking for summer housing.
The dining plan is a rip-off and food is mediocre for the price paid. The "dining dollars" is a giant scam, they essentially force you to spend the cumulative $30+ a week, but the store is so heavily marked up that you are far better off going to the local grocery store or Amazon, but you are already charged that amount as apart of the contract.
I am all for security, however the guest policy implementation is a mess. Every time I bring a guest through it is unnecessarily complex and inconsistent.
Don't expect to have a comfortable place to WFH. The desk chairs are too low for the desk and the "motion" lights require you to hilariously jump up and wave every 10 or so minutes to keep the lights on.
All in all, for the price paid, I would especially avoid this sort of summer housing where a meal plan is included, and would stay away from NYU Summer housing due to the other issues mentioned.
I stayed in Weinstein Hall for a week during the Career Edge Program. I found the dorms to be quite solid! The rooms were decently sized, not run-down, and each room had its own bathroom. The common area was very nice and I attended several events there. There was construction going on at the time, but Downstein was still open. Since I was only here for a week, I didn't get to experience everything fully, but I had an enjoyable and comfortable time here.
Sure the rooms are small, there’s not really a view, and the West hall is rumored to have rats and cockroaches, but if you get the East hall, you won’t have pest problems!
Plus it’s close to classes and has 4 different food places so it’s really an 11/10 for convenience.
There’s great AC and heating, and though the rooms are small it’s not like you really need a large room anyways, especially since the larger the room the more annoying to clean.
Also what do you even need a view for? It’s pretty useless and if you want a view just go to Bobst or Paulson or something.
If you prioritize convenience (like I majorly did), this is the dorm for you.
The security can be kinda rude but almost all of them are so whatever.
Nice dorms that are pretty large and have individual bathrooms. Elevators are incredibly slow so are pretty much useless. A couple lounges, including one with a kitchen. Laundry in the basement. Convenient location with CAS, Bobst, and Kimmel all nearby. Would not recommend Downstein as a dining choice.
The best !
Old, ugly, too many fire alarms. Prices way too high. You have to pay for 1 whole year of food for your freshman year. Ridiculous! Good Wi-Fi, though, and a nice lounge with a bathroom, water fountain, Television, Table Tennis table, Pool table, and seating area. Pretty good, but needs improvement.
Thumbs up
I dropped off my daughter as she is taking a high school summer program. I hope she will have a great experience and will learn many new things.
Absolutely fantastic place, I’ve been there for 8 years and its very good
