Unassuming exterior but bustling indoors during a weekday lunch. Walk-ins only and counter seating is available. Service is okay. Prices are okay. Food and service is more like 4.5 stars.
Hokkaido uni bowl - quite pricey at $45, uni is quite small but tastes heavenly along with the very vinegared rice. I chose salmon and squid for the 2 choices of other fish. Salmon is okay, not the freshest. Squid is also okay. Wish there was more wasabi given.
Fluke bowl - quite good value for money at $27 and you can choose 2 other kinds of fish.

Our go to sushi spot, it’s slightly pricier but the quality is fantastic for the price. Hole in the wall kind of place, I selfishly hope it stays unknown because it’s such a great find.

Came with a friend just after they opened at 11:30am on a weekday for a quick lunch. The smiling woman greeted us kindly and we did to-go orders. We ordered the 3 amigos donburi bowl for $24 and the Uni bowl with tuna & fluke for $35. We took a to-go order and it was ready in about 5 minutes. The place is most definitely family run, I think it's the owners husband and wife and son. The place has a vintage feel from the wood and the accessories, definitely well loved by local the local Japanese. When we opened our to-go packages we noticed the 3 Amigos bowl was stacked with fish but the uni bowl was a bit sparse. The salmon was my favorite cut of fish, super fatty and fresh. Well, we figured out what was missing, the uni! Haha. When we finished our meal, we walked back and they already had a table of Japanese businessmen. We showed them the photo of our obligatory shot before we ate and they apologized and gave us the small box of uni that was missing. Would recommend for the salmon and spicy salmon portion, tuna was pretty standard. Rice was nicely seasoned and fresh. Decent price and portion for the city.

Everyone who eats here seems to tell others about it. The space feels intentionally crafted. The meals satisfy hunger, incorporate fresh elements, and please the eye. Employees make guests feel truly at home. I hope this place stays in business forever.

Kaoru Sushi is one of those hidden gems that you’re grateful to discover and even happier to return to. It’s a cozy, inviting spot that immediately makes you feel comfortable the moment you step inside. The atmosphere is warm and relaxed, making it the kind of place you can visit not just for special occasions but as an everyday go-to for great sushi and Japanese comfort food.
The food is excellent. I tried both a roll and a donburi, and both were absolutely delicious. The sushi roll was fresh, perfectly prepared, and balanced in flavor — you can really taste the quality of the fish and the care that goes into each bite. The donburi was equally satisfying, hearty yet delicate, with flavors that felt authentic and thoughtfully put together. It’s the kind of food that keeps you coming back, not just because it’s good, but because it feels consistent and reliable.
What also stood out was the atmosphere. It’s small enough to feel personal but with enough seating that you don’t feel cramped. Service was warm and friendly, adding to the overall charm of the place.
In short, Kaoru Sushi is a true hidden gem — cozy, authentic, and consistently excellent. Definitely worth checking out if you’re in the neighborhood.

The best chirashi ever. I went there occasionally, 3 times dine-in and this time I ordered takeout. It’s still fresh when I got home. I love this place so much

Food is fine, staff not so much. They were talking shit about the appearance/outfits of other guests who left before I did. It's one thing to do in private, another thing to do in front of other guests. I can only imagine what was said about me after I left based on the context I had.
I will happily travel farther and pay more money for a meal than eat here ever again.

They literally only serve fish the day it’s received—no later—and it shows. Highest quality fish I’ve ever had at a restaurant serving sushi!
