Very disappointed. I’d heard great things and usually love Mediterranean food. I got the chicken shawarma plate and maqdous. Shawarma was flavorless even though it was covered in unnecessary white sauce. Portion was also small for the price (even though I had a first time 15% off code). Maqdous were extremely salty and otherwise flavorless. The staff was nice and passing out small cups of tea/coffee to waiting customers, but I don’t think I’ll go back when I can get less expensive and much more flavorful Mediterranean food elsewhere. :(

Being a food enthusiast myself, I’m always on the lookout for places that offer an authentic taste of home, especially when it comes to Middle Eastern cuisine. Lava Shawarma NYC, located at 12 W 23rd St, New York, NY 10010, truly delivers on that front. As someone from Oman, I’ve missed the nostalgic taste of traditional Arabic shawarma, and this spot managed to bring me right back to the streets of my hometown with every bite. The seating arrangements are traditional and unpretentious, adding to the overall authenticity of the experience. But what really impressed me was the food itself—an honest, culturally accurate representation of shawarma, prepared with skill and care.

One of the things I really appreciated was their generosity with condiments and fillings. Unlike many places that stick strictly to a set menu, Lava Shawarma allows you to customize your order with extra toppings or spices, making the meal feel personal and tailored to your preferences. They also offer a variety of vegetarian and vegan options, which is great for those with dietary restrictions. However, as someone who appreciates the classic shawarma made with meat, I would say that these plant-based options don’t quite measure up to the high standards set by the meaty dishes, which are top-notch.

The only downside is the pricing, which, while understandable given it's in New York City, does feel a bit high, especially when compared to what I’d pay for shawarma back home in Oman. Nevertheless, Lava Shawarma NYC is an excellent spot for anyone looking to indulge in traditional Arabic cuisine, whether it's your first time trying shawarma or you're in search of a nostalgic taste of home. It’s a great place to satisfy those cravings and immerse yourself in the flavors of the Middle East.

Extremely overpriced Dubai chocolate bar. Probably 95% chocolate and 5% of the actual filling you’re paying for. Don’t fall for the scam like I did :(

I wanted to order shawarma but made the wrong order. Rice dish didn’t like it was dry and sauce bitter. Free tea served near cashier. Fresh fries delicious.
They have “dubai chocolate” 10$ but small. 2 shapes. I tried heart. Didn’t like.
Crowded. People like it.

Excellent place! I went with my mom, and the portions were great! I ordered a beef and lamb wrap with fries and a soda! The food here is fresh, and I highly recommend this place!

The food is awful...bland, under seasoned and definitely not fresh.

The "Wagyu" burger is not Wagyu beef. came with a thin dry beef patty. Honestly even a McDonald's burger is better.

The mixed shawarma bowl was disappointing too...the chicken was really dry.

Don't understand all the great reviews

Service is decent however. Wish the food wasn't such a let down

My family and I had lunch at Lava and we had a great experience. We shared the chicken kabob and chicken burger with the fatoush salad. Everything was delicious.

This is the best shawarma place in NYC!
The food and service was impeccable. The authentic touch of the table side service for the Arabic Tea was the best part.

??? Everything was fantastic! The staff were absolutely wonderful, especially Mohammed.

I loved seeing the uncle in his traditional Jordanian Bedouin costume, and it was so nice of him to offer tea as a warm gesture of hospitality. ?
