We hadn't been here in a while. Looked forward.
Start positive: White rice, red beans, and arroz con gandules, very good.
However, on a Friday evening (7ish) , there was only 1 server for the entire section. It was not crowded. Empty tables in our section.We placed our orders right away with drinks and an appetizer.

La Fonda hits all the right notes. Cozy indoors with fantastic art by local, Puerto Rican and Spanish artists. (plus a covered outdoor backyard area great for parties). The menu is fabulous! Beloved Puerto Rican dishes with variations for diners' eating preferences (chicken, steak, pork, vegetarian) -- both full entrees, entree salads and tapas. The mofungo is fantastic! The service was wonderful. They also have special music and other entertainment that we may learn about...
This place is as typically Boricua as you can get. Food is great, drinks are too, and the service & ambiance are just what I’d expect from any local bar in Old SJ, for comparison. If you don’t like that, go look elsewhere! I felt right at home. A small warning for islanders coming for a visit, however: some of the more traditional dishes have some choice substitutions made, to work around availability, I suspect. Not to worry: they’re still just as tasty.
