Nice setting with high ceilings. Music was slightly loud. Good service but the food I tried was slightly disappointing.

Surprised by the high ratings as the food was mid.

Monterey burger - average

Szechuan chicken - meat was very dry

Service - not attentive, hard to flag the waiters down

Price - okay for the ambience

Ate here with my colleagues and had the worst, most appalling service I’ve ever experienced. Will not be returning, and would recommend spending your money elsewhere. The establishment was half empty when we were there and now it is clear why!

Unfortunately we got sucked into this tourist trap for Valentines night dinner. NY Post did an article on Monterey and usually they are on point with their reviews on restaurants, however our experience was subpar. Menu changed for Valentines $149 a person, they did call a few days before, however when looking at other restaurants in the NYC area they were all booked. So we went ahead with the reservation. The steaks were mediocre, Longhorn or Flemings does better steaks and sides dishes than Montereys and 50-75% less than their price. Dessert s were gross and We should have gone to Juniors Deli or Magnolias bakery for dessert!! 🥴 Server Patricia was cold and seemed aggravated when we asked for refills. The ambiance was the only thing positive out of the experience they did a good job with decorating for valentines, the restaurant was empty like 4 tables at 5 pm seating. And while having a dinner a couple walked in and refused to sit when they found out about the Valentine’s Day menu and the crazy price which was not worth it. We later saw there was a Red Lobster at Time Square and would have eaten there over Monterey’s .

Monterey is a steakhouse but has something for everyone - including vegetarians!
The restaurant is clean, classy, and beautiful. To drink, I loved the Bittersweet Citrus Spritz (very similar to an aperol spritz) which is featured on the menu at their sister restaurant, Acadia (also a huge fan).
To eat, the Comte Onion Bread is a must. The Truffle Lasagna is a delicious vegetarian option, I would have loved to have had more of that yummy truffle sauce on it however.
For dessert, the Chocolate Soufflé should not be missed. The Bananas Foster is also tasty, but I think it's a bit overpriced for what you get.
Overall, very tasty!

Unacceptable. Booked this restaurant weeks in advance before our upcoming trip to nyc for a birthday weekend. Notified today that the chef has decided to run a holiday tasting menu for Valentine’s Day instead. Inquired what is on the menu and the receptionist said she has no idea since it was just announced and directed us to the website.

Highly disappointed and feel bamboozled as it is already difficult to get reservations in nyc, let alone on a Valentine’s Day specific. Experience of tasting menus is lack luster when they’re thrown together for a special one day event, good luck with the cooks to execute it perfectly like a regular menu they’re used to.

Your regular menu should be offered with the option to opt for the holiday tasting menu instead.

Lasagna was quite bad. Service was also not great as the server kept interrupting us.

So very disappointed. Had a wonderful steak at this place last night. It was so good that we went back for a second round tonight, and it was bad.
Sent steak back, waited 35 minutes for a replacement that never came. Incredibly disappointing. Paid 400$ for appetizers and left starving. Will not return.

The mussels here are easily one of the most disgusting abominations I have ever put in my mouth. I would rather spend the rest of my life eating pea gravel than even touch my fork to one of those, what a joke

(Excellent atmosphere and staff. Had the oysters, shrimp and grits (head on) apps. Very good. NY Strip entree was pretty good. Only served with a jus. Needed bernaise or au poive sauce. Seared tuna on roasted cauliflower was better but very simple and no sauce. Side of brussel sprouts were under cooked in middle (deep fried). Chocolate ganache cake was great. Sorbets refreshing. It was very loud and echoey in there with the crowd and open kitchen. Great event spaces upstairs. Bill was $360 all in with tip. 2 apps, 2 entrees, 1 side, 2 desserts. 5 glasses of wine.

The dinner scene is LOUD. It didn’t used to be that way. You could have a quiet business dinner or a romantic night out. Now it’s too loud for easy conversation and they won’t lower the decibel level. But the lunch time ambience is still lovely. I highly recommend Monterey for lunch. For dinner, be prepared for a night club ambience.

Monterey joyfully remains one of the absolute best restaurants in the entire City for a celebratory meal. The stylish room is keyed to a scale and tempo that feels right for a really special date for two or a festive birthday party for a group; two birthday parties and counting so far! The menu is excellent and really shines with new-again presentations of classics like Prime Rib from a rolling carvery, perfect steaks for two and very strong seafood entrees. The staff is polished and even playful which always adds to the fun. A "can't miss" in Midtown.

I'll go back for the BBQ Head-on Shrimp & Grits & try Fri's $75 Prime Rib special. Otherwise, Drinks, Fish & steak were average & it was an average experience. Everything was overpriced for what it is. Also, a $45 Bananas Foster dessert - even though it can be shared w/ 3 people - is just ridiculous! Just offer & price it accordingly for 1 person & we would've gotten it.
