Best Indian restaurant on the upper east side. I’ve tried them all.
Lamb Rogsn Josh is the best. The price is very reasonable. I tried this dish in many Indian restaurants Not even close. I do hope they will reopen soon
Mumtaz is easily the best Indian food I've had in New York. The madras sauce is spicy and delicious and everything else is great. A favorite of our family and all of our friends.
Nice hidden gem with authentic Indian fare. Friendly service an unbeatable prices at lunch special and also at dinner.
A crown jewel nestled on York Avenue. The decor is humble. The portions are incredible!! For the price, a must-visit for everyone! I highly recommend Mumtaz for Indian fare!
I got chicken biryani which is one of my faves and it was like if I tried to make it without knowing the recipe lol. Chicken, rice, and tomato slices in a bowl. Lacking sauce/spice/flavor.
I have been going to Mumtaz for many years and I must say that whether I order the fish shagpiazi, chicken tandoori, or the shrimp tikka/masala, it is all so tasty and delicious. I'm just a bit surprised that considering the quality of the food and the more than reasonable cost, it's not more crowded than it is. Jeffrey, the proprietor, is very gracious and always willing to bring more rice accompanied by their delicious chick pea sauce. Lastly, having their own cordial concoction is also a tasty finale to a wonderful dinner.
Best lunch special on Upper East Side! Quality Indian fare. Generous portions at a very fair price. Warm and balanced seasoning leave pleasant aftertaste. Zesty accompaniments crown a fine meal.
Had a fantastic dinner here. Enjoyed the cozy atmosphere and exceptional service. Nice place for delicious food and a spot to relax after with a cup of tea or liquor. Will be coming back and telling friends!
The best Indian around! Such a great local business.

Tasty food and peaceful, clean environment.
As wonderful today as it was 20 years ago when first we enjoyed it.
Visiting friend on the UES and it's one of her favorite restaurants in her neighborhood and I can see why.The restaurant was colorfully decorated with velvet walls and beautiful tapestries and mirrors. The owner/ waiter was a lovely and welcoming gentleman. We had the garlic naan, chicken masala, and lamb mushrooms, which were all tender and perfectly spiced! My lentil soup was also delicious and needed no extra condiments precisely as my friend had predicted. The complimentary papadam with accompanying sauces and onions would've been enough without the naan, but there was plenty for leftovers. In addition, we were treated to an aperitif that was perfectly lightly spiced ending a wonderfully quiet evening wherein we were able to have a conversation. For a Friday, it seemed quiet, but they seemed to have quite a brisk takeout business. There were couples there on dates and a mix of friends. Highly recommend this authentic neighborhood gem.
Really good! The appetizer fried shrimp and poori bread was a great start. The entrees chicken Tika masala, saag paneer, and lamb biryani was very good. The service was quick and on point. Thank you!
