Whenever I travel to Manhattan one of the days I eat at this place, well attended, well located and they prepare a very good burger.

This old standby is a destination restaurant, and by “this,” I mean the original P.J. Clarke’s at 55th and 3rd in manhattan. Founded in the 1880’s P.J.’s is the quintessential Irish pub. In its long history, it’s been a hangout for celebrities, as well as ordinary folks. Unfortunately it’s gone corporate and eponymous spots have opened in lower manhattan, Vegas, and elsewhere, and with that some of the charm is lost. Stick with the basics….burgers, Mac & cheese, and clams on the half shell, and you can’t go wrong. You’ll know you’ve joined the club once you don’t have to ask where the onion is when your burger arrives.

The best meal we had in NYC, and no queues / not hard to get a table!! The burger was one of the best we’ve ever had. Our only regret is not going again!

My wife and I used to love this place, dining and drinking there pretty much once a week for six years. But after moving to San Francisco we only recently had the opportunity to visit the old haunt.

The people are still great. Our bartender Theruni was very pleasant and made good martinis. Our server at dinner was attentive and cheerful.

It’s the food offerings that have gone downhill. We were there quite early (6pm) after a Sunday theater matinee, yet they were out of oysters. The place no longer serves creamed spinach; okay, tastes change, what other vegetables are available? French fries—and, literally, only French fries.

Or a salad maybe, but not the Bleu cheese wedge anymore, or anything creative in the slightest.

Wife had a decent, not great, steak; I was served a gigantic chicken paillard that covered the entire plate, with a tiny garnish of spinach. It came out dry and uninteresting.

Perhaps the burgers are still good. Otherwise, sadly, the original P.J.Clarke’s is no longer worth a visit.
