A tiny little family run place with big flavors. Love that there is a very well labeled and lengthy vegan menu. Had the Chana Saag, best I’ve had in a while. Good portion sizes. Updated from previous review on 2025-06-18
By far the best Indian food I've had in NYC. The butter chicken tasted like it was straight out of India. Strongly recommend!!

Red Onion is a culinary gem that transports you straight to the bustling streets of India.
The Gobi Tak-A-Tak was an absolute revelation – a symphony of flavors that danced on the palate. The spices were authentic and bold, perfectly balanced to create a truly memorable dish. The meat was tender and juicy, a testament to the chef's skill.
But the true stars of the show is Varun, whose kindness, hospitality and royalty made the dining experience even more delightful. Whether you're a seasoned Indian food lover or a curious newcomer, Red Onion is a must-visit.

The food is a lot better than good. We ate there last Sunday. The Panak paneer and butter chicken are way beyond good. The house wine is the house wine. You can order a selection of French wines if you’re a somalier.
It’s a 40 seater with several tables outside. Get there before the weather turns, otherwise, good luck.

If you're looking for outstanding Indian food in NYC, Red Onion is an absolute must-visit. The meat here is incredibly tender, practically melting in your mouth with every bite. The spices are perfectly balanced—neither too overwhelming nor underwhelming and give each dish a depth of flavor that's truly unmatched. I've never tasted Indian food this good anywhere in the city. Whether you're a fan of heat or prefer a more subtle flavor profile, they hit the perfect spot with their seasoning. Highly recommend it for anyone craving authentic and mouthwatering Indian cuisine.
