I miss the days when Sakagura felt truly special, both in experience and menu. In the past few years they’ve replaced their traditional Japanese menu with what feels like more generic crowd pleasers like fried chicken, pork belly, etc. Their snow crab rice used to be a standout dish with large, succulent pieces of crab in a bowl of fluffy white rice, but the’ve replaced it with a small bowl of rice with shredded crab on par with what you might find at any Japanese restaurant...
The food and sake pairing recommended by our waiter was incredible (they also have limited but decent wine options - I had a delicious chablis). Food wise, we had the 5-type sashimi starter, black cod and pork belly for mains, and macha tiramisu and sorbet for dessert - all incredible. First dinner on this trip to NY and it hit all the right notes. Our waiters were very attentive and friendly. Overall lovely space with good energy, would definitely come back!
Good service and atmosphere. We got the five kind sashimi where all the fish was fresh (except the hokkaido uni which they end up replacing with a different fish), grilled black cod which was too greasy and did not taste fresh and I couldn't finish it. The vegetarian udon and tomago were good.
