At first glance, the environment is a high class Japanese themed restaurant, the workers there might not be Japanese, but provide an authentic and delicious meal. Their kindness and hospitality really made this experience enjoyable. The food itself was affordable and of highest quality, I ordered a 70$ set that came with 2 wagyu beef sushi 2 waygu steak pieces, a hotpot set with lots of Japanese and American Waygu, and to top it off a matcha affogato dessert where you get to top it off with as much matcha as you like. Overall, I recommend this play if you are looking for an underrated fine Japanese dining with the highest quality meats and kindest workers.
What a great find!! We got a reservation just a couple hrs prior on a Sat night! We ordered the American wagyu beef meal each. It came with fantastic and beautiful appetizers, an extra app from the chef, a great portion of high quality veggies and the meat and sauces were phenomenal! We are huge shabu fans and this place did not disappoint! It's super quiet and a nice reprieve from the city. Also you must try the match green tea! It's truly a special treat. The staff were wonderful as well. Will definitely be coming back here!
If you want a true Japanese experience, this is the place! Outstanding food and presentation. 100% recommend.
Great food, wonderful ambience, excellent service. The Shabu Shabu was delicious! We will go back soon!
Overpriced for some vegatables and 10 slices of beef. Services is meh and food is below mid. I have never left a restaurant feeling like I got scammed but this restaurant I got scammed.
ShabuShabu GEN was a great experience all around! The ambiance was cozy, the staff was super friendly and helpful and the food was next level delicious. Sanjida and Ivy were wonderful as they guided us through how to cook and enjoy the meal. ShabuShabu GEN is admittedly a little pricey but it's worth every penny! Don't skip the Japanese wagyu!
Wow amazing hidden gem! Perfect food, service, and atmosphere!! Authentic and high quality, would 100% come back

Delicious! Run don't walk to this authentic Shabu Shabu and Sukiyaki experience. Melt in your mouth Wagyu. Highly recommend.
We tried the American Wagyu sukiyaki and the Japanese Wagyu shabu shabu. It goes without saying that the Japanese Wagyu had amazing marbling in comparison, but overall both were good quality and tasted great. The sukiyaki flavor was pretty authentic, but the shabu shabu broth was a bit disappointing. Just a seaweed broth, whereas the shabu shabu I’ve had in Japan offered different broth flavors. Perhaps just the style of the restaurant. It came with nice dipping sauces, but would’ve loved to have had more flavor soaked into the meat and vegetables themselves.
Great service and nice, quiet atmosphere as the restaurant isn’t too large. The ice cream is worth it as well if you’re a fan of matcha.

Absolutely amazing experience at Sukiyaki Shabu Shabu GEN! The quality of the ingredients was outstanding, and the sukiyaki broth was perfectly balanced with a rich, savory sweetness. The service was attentive and made us feel right at home. It’s the ideal spot for a warm, comforting meal. Highly recommend for anyone who loves Japanese hot pot dining!

I had a wonderful experience here! I love Japanese food, and ShabuShabu Gen delivered high quality tasteful dishes. The plates were clean and artistic, and extremely flavorful. My server, Ivy, was charismatic and very helpful. I was unsure about the order of things in the beginning, and she made sure I felt comfortable and attended to. She has a bright cheerful spirit, and is a lovely addition to ShabuShabu Gen!
What a delicious treat! So happy I chose ShabuShabu Gen for my first Japanese meal in NYC!

First I must say that I’m leaving this place with a happy belly.
The food was amazing. We had the American wagyu shabu shabu and the suki yaki to try both. The shabu is way more bland than standard but everything else still tasted amazing. We added $5 for the green tea affogato which was good too.
But will we come back? I don’t think so. Because whilst the food was good, the service ruined the whole experience.
The servers were really friendly but they were absolutely clueless.
My server dropped by noodles on the table and then proceeded to pick them up with her hand and put in back into the bowl (and then served it to me).
And then, I asked for rice and they looked at me like I was crazy because I wanted my rice before the meal ends.
And then to top it off, before they served the dessert, the guy used a towel that smelled like dirty rag plus chemicals to wipe out table and that was pretty much all we smelled for the rest of the night.
So dear owner, I love your restaurant, the food and vibe were great, but please have the staff trained. Because this is such a waste of good food.

Food was amazing. But the service was horrible. The server dropped by noodles on the table and then used her hands to pick it back up into the bowl and served it to me.
Meat was excellent. Honestly, with slightly more attentive service and a bit of polish it would be 5 stars.
