We had a great friend’s meetup before anime claw. The sushi was very fresh and while the combinations weren’t quite there I’d still recommend for takeout or a casuals date night in the area. You can get your sushi fix and be close to many night life activities after.

We got one of their omakase sets. It came with about 15 pieces of sushi. The set included mackerel, trout, squid, toro, and uni among other dishes. All the pieces were fresh and delicious. There was only 1 piece that we didn’t really care for but only cause it lacked flavor compared the others. Our favorites were the uni and otoro.

We also got the green tea tiramisu for dessert. Very strong and bitter matcha flavor which went well with the vanilla ice cream.

One of the best sushi places in town. Everything was excellent . We had several combinations of sushi and sashimi and was just delicious. Went there 3 times already . Service is very friendly..and behind the sushi bar there is an “angry” demanding sushi man :-) we felt in safe hands!! I would go again!!

Sushi and sashimi were of excellent quality and taste! My husband and I wanted to try as much sushi and sashimi as possible, so we ordered everything a la carte since it was our first visit to this place. The service was fast and our waiter Robin was really helpful, making the overall experience even better. The pricing was modest for New York City standards. Excellent ambience, perfect for a lovely meal. We plan to return to try their omakase and make these restaurant one of our regulars to come back to in Manhattan.

There's a lot of different omakase restaurants around NYC but Katsuei strikes the right balance between price and quality. The service is always top notch and I've never had bad fish there. The open omakase is also a fun experience especially in a group of 4

We have had the omakase twice, and this place is such a sleeper. Some of the best sushi in the city. Our new go to for a nice sushi night out.

Second time there in a month, the fish of our sushi was so cold that everything basically tasted the same. Unfortunate for a $135, 15 pieces Omakase. To make things worse, we were incredibly rushed and got the whole thing in 55min! Lots of better options in NYC at that price point.

Comically bad Japanese restaurant specializing in omakase. Fish is dry and not fresh. The sushi rice is so hard i was worried i might break a tooth. Sushi pieces come with the rice part pre dipped in the saltiest soy sauce i've ever tasted. You would think this incredibly salty soy sauce would make the rice melt the way it seems to melt your stomach walls, but no, the rice grains are rock solid. One particularly memorable piece was the uni, half of which was very black, probably from necrosis.

Service was pushy to boot. We were all encouraged to order omakase. We ended up passing many pieces around the table like hot potatoes no one wanted to touch.

Bloated and over-dated and stale restaurants like this should be kicked out of the city to make space for better omakase.

We had the pleasure of dining at Sushi Katsuei, and I can confidently say that it was an unforgettable culinary experience. From the moment I walked in, I was enveloped in a warm and inviting atmosphere that set the stage for what would be an exceptional meal.

We opted for the omakase, which is a traditional Japanese dining style where the chef selects and serves a series of dishes based on the freshest ingredients of the day. This experience allows diners to sit at the counter right in front of the sushi chef, creating an intimate interaction as they prepare each piece of sushi right before your eyes. It's a unique opportunity to witness the artistry and precision that goes into crafting each dish, while also receiving personal attention and insights from the chef about the ingredients and flavors.

Our sushi chef was not only skilled but also incredibly friendly and engaging. He made us feel right at home and took the time to explain each dish as it was presented, sharing stories about the fish and its origins. It was clear that he had a deep passion for his craft, which made the experience all the more enjoyable.

The sushi itself was outstanding. Each piece was a work of art, showcasing fish from all over the world, with a particular emphasis on selections from the waters south of Japan and Cape Cod. The freshness and quality of the fish were truly remarkable. From buttery tuna to delicate flounder, each bite was a delightful explosion of flavor. The chef’s expert knife skills and attention to detail were evident in every piece, making the omakase a true testament to the artistry of sushi making.

One of the highlights was the chef’s unique presentations and the thoughtful combinations of flavors. It was evident that each dish was carefully curated to provide a perfect balance of taste and texture. The accompanying sauces and garnishes enhanced the experience without overpowering the freshness of the fish.

Furthermore, my husband, who is gluten-free, appreciated that the chef was accommodating and made adjustments based on his dietary needs. This level of consideration added to our positive experience, as it allowed us both to enjoy the meal without any concerns.

The intimate setting of Sushi Katsuei added to the experience, allowing for a personal connection between the chef and the diners. The ambiance was relaxed, making it a perfect spot for a special occasion or a memorable night out.

In conclusion, Sushi Katsuei exceeded all my expectations. The omakase was a culinary journey that showcased the best of what sushi has to offer, all while being guided by a friendly and talented chef. If you’re a sushi lover in NYC, I highly recommend making a reservation at Sushi Katsuei. It’s an experience that celebrates the art of sushi and will leave you craving more long after you leave!

Dietary restrictions: They were very accommodating to my husband who has a gluten allergy for the omakase dinner

Just my favorite people in the whole world. I’m a regular here, and they treat you like family. Order a La carte and get the shrimp tempura and the nodoguro sushi if they have it in stock. Fish is always buttery smooth and perfectly prepared
