Tanoshi Sushi on the Upper East Side redefines intimate dining with its cozy, 10-seat setup and exceptional Edomae-style omakase. Visited on a quiet Wednesday evening, the atmosphere was both relaxed and engaging, perfect for our party of two.

The moment we stepped in, the minimalist décor and the warm greeting set the tone. The chefs, working just feet away, curated a seamless flow of courses, each presented with precision and care. 

Stand-out Highlights
• The miso-marinated black sable was a buttery delight.
• Amberjack nigiri topped with a hint of spicy sauce offered a balanced kick.
• The BYOB policy enhanced the experience, allowing us to pair our favorite sake without a corkage fee.  

Balanced Drawbacks
The seating is snug, which might not suit those seeking spacious dining. Also, the pace is brisk; diners preferring a leisurely meal should be prepared. 

Insider Tip
Opt for the 7:30 PM seating to enjoy a lively ambiance and consider adding the crab brain nigiri—it’s a unique treat.

We always pick-up and never had a problem. We love the shrimp bun and the brussels sprouts. Highly recommend.

The worst omakase experience I’ve ever had.
I came in for lunch and ordered the $60, 6 piece set. Every piece of fish tasted watery, mushy, and completely lacked flavor some even had a bad smell. It was clear the fish was not fresh at all. I left feeling really disappointed and honestly a bit sick.

What’s worse, it’s very obvious that this restaurant doesn’t care about their customers they just want to get rid of old, unfresh fish and make a quick buck. The main chef didn’t seem to care at all about what he was making. He was chatting with his coworkers the entire time, totally checked out. I couldn’t help but wonder did he even think about what he was serving?

I walked in because of the good Google reviews, but I want to warn others: don’t let the ratings fool you. This meal ruined my whole day. Be careful before you waste your time and money here.

Welldone Lighting

If you’re looking for an authentic omakase experience, look no further—this place is the real deal. Every piece of sushi was a masterpiece, with the kind of precision and freshness that makes you momentarily forget every other meal you’ve ever had. Chef Tomoki elevated the entire experience, not just with his incredible skill, but with his humor and personality. He had us laughing between bites of perfectly crafted sushi, making the meal feel both intimate and unforgettable.

From the melt-in-your-mouth fish to the perfectly seasoned rice, every course was a journey of flavors. If you appreciate true Japanese craftsmanship this is the omakase spot for you. Can’t wait to come back!

The ingredients are very fresh, the sushi rice is a little soft, and the venue is very small, basically only 8 people can sit there. You can bring your own wine and there is no corkage fee.
They had 3 shows in one night, and it basically ended in an hour and a half. It felt very rushed. We brought 3 bottles of wine, and it was over after one and a half bottles.
It is recommended that chefs wear masks!

I agree with most of my fellow reviewers - the sushi here is unforgettable and truely deserves the five stars. However, the place itself feels very basic, no comfortable dining chairs, very tight space with restrooms next door. If they fixed that it would be a perfect dinner experience
