Love this place and look forward to visiting when I'm in town to see the ballet, which is often. The only downside is when it's crowded, the tables are packed in in a way that makes it hard to maneuver around, almost uncomfortably so and very loud. Still, ill be back over and over!
The food was great! Table favorite was the oyster of the day. I enjoyed the ambiance (sitting in the back room is less noisy). The servers had good energy and made us feel welcomed. The restaurant did not acknowledge my friend's birthday, and there were times we had to ask multiple people for the same thing (like a knife), and our drinks were late (came after appetizer). All in all, we all said we'd be back.
Really loud and really busy, but the food is good enough and it works when one has additional plans in the neighborhood.
While I did ask for a quiet area, the area I was actually placed in was still very noisy. I later discovered that there was a back area which was very quiet. There were some people seated there, and I couldn't figure out why I had not been placed there. Next time I will request the back area.
Seated by a very large party in a small room so it was very loud, but otherwise we enjoyed our meal as we always do at the Smith!
The food is average and probably dependable. The name “The Smith,” per the web was chosen to indicate that attention is paid to careful crafting of the food. The sound level is unbearable, perhaps akin to a blacksmith's shop.
⚠️ WARNING ⚠️ — The Smith is racist. If you’re Black, especially dark-skinned, don’t expect to be a server. They will make you a busser while white people run the floor. I went to three locations, and every time it was the same.
When I asked why, they told me “the dark skin image isn’t a thing.” Really? That’s your excuse for discriminating? Newsflash: it is a thing, and it’s happening every day at your restaurants.
This isn’t just about me — it’s about fairness and respect. Don’t support a place that decides your role based on skin color. Spread the word.

The food is consistently delicious. The best place to dine at around Lincoln Center and AMC theatre. Paige was our server and she was so friendly and attentive. This is our go to spot on movie nights!

I used to love this place and would come pretty often, but lately it’s just not the same. The food still tastes good, I’ll give them that, but everything else has taken a hit.
Me and my fiancée ordered our usual: two Smith burgers and calamari. The calamari portion was super small, like an appetizer for one, which was disappointing. The burgers were flavorful like always, but the buns were dry and hard, definitely not fresh. It kind of killed the whole thing.
What really did it for me, though, was the service. The staff came off kind of rude, and the manager was nowhere to be found when we needed help. He eventually came by and tried to assist, but by then we were already over it. We just wanted to leave.
After years of being a loyal customer, I think this might be it for me. It sucks because this used to be my go-to spot. Now I guess I’m on the hunt for a new burger place.

Jay is such a charismatic server and made my birthday perfect! Ive actually come here every year for my birthday and have always had a perfect time. if you live in nyc, its a staple
Exactly across the street from Lincoln Center and in the heart of the Upper West Side, The Smith is filled with everyone from pre- and post-theatergoers to neighborhood families to global travelers, where my partner and I decided on brunch last Saturday. The reservation was easily made with OpenTable.
Each location of this establishment boasts a unique ambiance, blending modern design with classic elements - a nod to old-school New York.
Upon entering, the interior is characterized by open layouts, communal tables, and a lively atmosphere, making it suitable for everyone. We were greeted by the host and got a table in a private room usually held for special events.
Their menu features a variety of classic American dishes, emphasizing fresh, locally sourced ingredients.
As an appetizer, we opted for the Mac & Cheese and Crispy Calamari. As a main meal, we decided on Avocado Toast and a French Dip Sandwich accompanied by Fries. Complimentary sourdough bread with salted butter and one bottle of spring water and one of sparkling water started our meal.
The Mac and Cheese served in a mini skillet was phenomenal. The cheese was dripping, and the noodles were perfectly chewy, with the top having that crust, too. The food was fresh, well-prepared, and perfectly portioned. The cost didn’t break the wallet. We had the pleasure of having Adonis as our server, and the service was quick. He was fantastic and would check on us.
This place provides satisfaction.

The tables are very close together and the noise level is very high. The food is good and the service is pretty good. It is very nice that they provide both sparkling water and still water on the tables.
Excellent place to eat if you eat outside. The staff was pleasant and attentive. The noise level on the inside was louder than any other restaurant we have ever eaten in. This is due to the hard surfaces (top, bottom and sides) that reflect sound. When people can not understand their dining companions because of the noise, they simply talk louder and the process accelerates.
I wanted to bring up a concern from my recent visit to The Smith. I ordered the Chappellet Signature Cabernet Sauvignon listed on your menu at $165. The server explained there was a “year difference,” but what was actually brought was the Chappellet Mountain Cuvée — a completely different wine at a much lower tier and price point.
I asked them to discount it at least but my server insisted the price was firm after asking the manager. A $40 bottle should have been $100-120 tops. I still left a nice cash tip to not embarrass the waitress more than necessary.
I’m sure you understand how this feels misleading, especially at a premium price level. If the Signature was unavailable, transparency would have been appreciated so I could make an informed choice rather than being served a different product under the assumption it was equivalent.
