I love Van Leeuwen and come here often for a sweet treat, especially when I need a little pick-me-up. Today was one of those days. I had just gotten difficult news from the vet about my dog having a cancerous tumor and I was hoping my usual chocolate cone could bring a little comfort.
Unfortunately, this visit left me feeling even worse. The scoop I received was tiny…honestly, it looked like a kids size, but I was charged the usual $8. I looked around and noticed that everyone else’s scoops were much larger, so I politely asked the worker (a woman with braids and green square glasses) if sizes had changed or if I’d been given a kids scoop by mistake. Her response was incredibly dismissive. She seemed annoyed that I even asked, and just told me that a new person had scooped it and tends to give smaller portions. She followed that by saying she didn’t know what I wanted her to do or say.
There was no apology, no offer to fix it, no basic kindness, just indifference. I didn’t want to argue or be a Karen, so I let it go, but I saw her roll her eyes and start chatting with another employee right after I walked away. It was really disheartening. I sat there afterwards watching several other customers receive much larger scoops, which only added to the sting. I even asked the people next to me what sizes they got and they had the same as me (one flavor) but were given larger portions.
I hate leaving bad reviews, especially for a place I genuinely love and support regularly, but today VL really let me down 😔
I had the sweet potato marshmallow vegan flavour and it was so good. There’s a good variety of vegan options
Anytime I'm on the Lower East side, I stop in for a cone. My most recent visit happened to be on the early side, and was able to walk right to the counter. I do know that later in the day, especially in warm weather, things do get crowded. Even so, the wait is worth it
This was my first time trying Van Leeuwen Ice cream. I was very happy with my experience. I went when it wasn’t crowded and was met with great service- the woman helping me let me sample like 5 flavors, which was very patient and kind of her, because I have a hard time making choices… but eventually I did and I didn’t regret my decision at all. I chose chocolate brownie and Marion berry cheesecake. The flavors worked well together and neither were too sweet. And the scoop size was generous which was also great! So yummy!
It was delicious! I had the peanut butter something. Get it
This place is amazing!
Wow, sooo good! Perfect flavor and consistency. Nice atmosphere to stop and have a cone or cup.
The vegan ice cream was pretty nice
To die ❤️❤️❤️ vegan chocolate peanut butter with honeycomb omg
The team behind the counter never made you feel rushed and were helpful with suggestions. The milkshakes are delicious and can be made with non-dairy milk. The cookies and cream and chocolate milkshakes hit the spot.

My fav ice cream! Many delicious flavors both vegan, gluten free and more. I was kinda surprised that the shop is a little grimey but I guess that's NYC.
