I got the okra+spinach w/ spicy goat. It was out of this world. The owner gave me a call a few minutes after I made the order to let me know they were out of fufu (pounded yams) and replaced it with yellow rice. I enjoyed the goat — it has a kick but not overwhelmingly spicy. The choice I made was excellent. I am most definitely ordering again and hope I can try the fufu next time.

Nneji is one of the spots that I will ALWAYS recommend to folks visiting my neighborhood. Beatrice and her fam make absolutely delicious Nigerian stews with great ingredients. They truly care about providing nourishing food at good prices. They also are incredibly welcoming, always down for good conversation about the food, about nutrition, about anything. Not only that, they consistently provide healthy meals for mutual aid efforts in the neighborhood. This spot is a total gem.

If it wasn't normal to give a place with no obvious flaws a 5 star review, I might give it a 4, but I've had very little of this cuisine, so I will credit my four star like of the food to my ignorance. (TBH, it very well could be the very best example of the cuisine in NYC)

The place is a little hole in the wall, cooking mostly stews done in back and kept in a steam table for the very limited service hours. They love the food and are happy to talk about it and give samples to get you to understand what you're getting, and work with you on mixed plates for one person. Amazingly they also prefer (!) card to cash, which is awesome to me.

As I said before. They're stew specialists. Both normal (chicken) and interesting meats, as well as a bunch of vegan options that I, as a meat eater, have no issues eating and enjoying.

I'm not planning to go back weekly, but expect to be back about once a month. (oh, and they do a ton of good giving back stuff if you care about that. [I don't] )

Such welcoming and kind staff; we had the best conversation with her on the origins and how to eat fufu; so excited to eat the egusi soup!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I got the jollof rice with chicken which was a bit dry - they used chicken breasts which is surprising because they're more expensive than the more commonly used chicken thighs at most other international restaurants. At least it's a healthier protein, I suppose.

But I also got the egusi stew & I'm so glad I did because it completed the dish. The whole thing had a bit of spice to it but it was very tasty. And I paid about $28 for a good sized portion of chicken, rice, & egusi (vegetarian?) stew

I'm gonna try this place again in the near future to see if the dry rice & chicken was just a one time thing. If so, I might get something saucier with the jollof rice. Maybe the lamb. Like I said, it was all quite tasty but just a bit dry without that egusi stew.

We had a wonderful experience with the ladies of Nneji - they served us some delicious chicken and beans and we had a nice conversation about Yoruba influence in Brasil.

You could not find a more perfect place for a grab-and-go meal. They do to-go during the week (West African hits like jollof rice and lamb) and also sell some hard-to-find ingredients for cooking. Also, it is staffed by literal angels who will make your day brighter just by talking to them. Don’t skip it!
