Sunday, 6/9/24, I was craving soul food. We went to an old spot we use to frequent years ago but the vibe, for me, was off. We left, googled and found Cassie's. Nice, relaxed and comfortable atmosphere and location. I would recommend they turn the music down a bit but overall nice.
Customer service was a bit weird at first. No greeting and ignored for a while as the lady filled orders in front of us.
Once the second lady came out, she grinned and greeted us. We ordered two dinners and two additional sides that came up to $63. Considering today's prices, can't complain. My hubby ordered jerk rice, chicken and yams, I ordered the same but Mac n cheese instead of yams.
(Not sure why but we had to wait, 7-10 mins, after placing our to go order. They don't serve or plate as you order, though the food is right there already cooked and can be serve while or immediately after you order. Being that we'd probably have to wait for a side of greens, we didn't go back to add to the order.)
So we received our food then decided to stay and eat a bit. Great place to relax, enjoy a meal and converse with family.

OKAY THE FOOD: The yams were good. Not too sweet, not mushy or hard but just right. My husband rated them second to mine. Our daughter (14 yo) said they tasted weird. We had two side orders extra yams. Ours tased good packed with the rest of our food but the sides, placed in the plastic container did taste a bit off, possibly because of the plastic.
Surprisingly, not many people can make great to amazing tasting baked Mac n cheese. Unfortunately, they are one of the many that can't. It was overcooked, lacking flavor, no crisp from being baked and not quite right. It wasn't the worst but I wouldn't buy it again. We gave it to our son (22 yo) and he loved it. I wasn't surprised because he loves almost everything that's made with cheese.
The jerk chicken was not like any jerk I've ever had. It was sweet, I expected spicy heat, it was more like BBQ sauce, not at all spicy. It tasted good though. Our eldest daughter (19 yo) liked it. None of us could eat the soggy skin but the sauce was good, it seasoned the rice very well.
My husband and I believe, overall they did well.
I would try them again with the family.

Update: I tried at least 3 times since to bring the family. We don't eat pork or other people's fish. We weren't interested in anything else on the menu except the jerk chicken. We went there, the 1st time with the family, no jerk chicken. Called the following week, they said they will have jerk at the end of the week, on Thurs. We brought the family Thurs, no jerk. We expressed our disappointment and left. We called again and explained we don't eat any other protein you make and the jerk was good, we'd like to bring our family to dine here but we only want the jerk. They said come Sat we'll have it for you. We brought the family Sat, STILL NO JERK CHICKEN. Now we're looking crazy, again wasted their (our family's) time and left hungry.
We haven't returned or tried again.

Being inconsistent, inconsiderate and careless of others time will not grow your business. It's truly hard supporting local black owned businesses when most operate in this manner. I hope we, as minority entrepreneurs, learn to do better, especially for our own (like other groups).
