great service and atmosphere! Worth every penny spent 204 between three people and drinks.
Very disappointed! Could not have been more disappointed with our experience! I had chosen Char for my husband's birthday (although we did not want to share that with the waitress) because most of the members of our family wanted a good steak house meal. I gave my husband two choices for restaurants and told him to pick the menu he liked the best. He chose Char and how disappointing and shocking was it to arrive a completely dismantled restaurant! There was no explanation of this on the restaurant website - no mention of the fact that it was offering a very limited menu with only one steak option. When we arrived I asked the valet who is stationed right by the restaurant entrance and he just said “you should ask her meaning the woman at the hotel front desk” like it was a secret that they didn't want to reveal. When we got to the temporary location we were met with a hostess who showed no interest or enthusiasm what so ever. Even my teenage son remarked on it. I felt more hopeful when we saw the temporary space which nicely appointed and had a wonderful view. Then we opened the menu and saw a very limited number of options. Our waitress was dressed in a very ill fitting unprofessional top and dirty sneakers. She was, however very nice and professional in her manner and attentive. The food was somewhat uninspired- like it could have been any old hotel restaurant. The prices were high given the quality. desert options were also limited and again uninspired- same options that pretty much every restaurant in Rochester offers. I get that the restaurant is limited given the renovations but they should have made it clear in the website that they are undergoing these renovations and post the temporary menu so customers are not caught off guard and can make an educated decision. The waitress did encourage us to come back when they are back to full speed but I we were so disappointed in the way Char handled this that I doubt we we I'll go back.
The NYE dinner was supposed to include champagne, but apparently that's only if you stick around until midnight (which is intentionally deceitful). The salad portion was embarrassingly small, the server clearly forgot about the table since it took 2.5 hours to be served a 3 course meal (other tables came and went in the time we were there). Will not go back to Char again. What a disappointment this place has become.
Three of the six meals cooked incorrectly. Meals had to be sent back. Server was very nice.
Dinner on Christmas Eve at Char was great! Very pleased with the service, food quality, and overall experience. We will be returning.
Olga, at the bar was wonderful in every way. Drinks were perfectly made, service excellent and meal delicious!
Food and service were outstanding! We came for breakfast before visiting Eastman house, great start to the day!
The entire menu is overpriced for the quality of what you receive. 2 out of 3 filets were overcooked — a huge disappointment for a restaurant that prides itself on being a steakhouse. Maybe management needs to provide the chefs with meat thermometers .. Sharables have been scaled back considerably in size.
First experience staying at the Strathallen and dining at Char. Very nice place to stay and eat. The steak and french fries were done perfectly. The service was great. Why the three stars? When we asked one bartender for the bill, they brought us the bill. I signed it and wrote my room number on it. I am usually a very generous tipper and usually tip Benjamin's. I had a Benjamin pulled out to give it to the bartenders. One of the other bartenders came up right as I was making that decision and said to us "are you sure you guys are staying at the hotel". It was very insulting. Almost a Pretty Woman moment. Like we didn't look good enough to be staying at the Strathallen. So I held back the Benjamin. Other than that bad taste in our mouth, we had a great time. 40th anniversary getaway!

For the price of the steak I would think a piece of strip steak without as much tendon, sinew and nerve in it would have been much more acceptable. Very difficult cutting through all the tendons and also chewing. A shame because the few parts that could be eaten (seasoned nicely) were very good. My companion's meal was no better with the rice being hard and the lobster being mushy (lobster risotto). Ambience was okay and service was okay...hostess was very nice, busboy was very polite and nice, waitress seemed a little fake but overall couldn't complain... but food was a disappointment. For the prices expected better. Would not go back.
Just awful. 11/26 fungi appetizer and halibut special (tried twice) inedible. Sauces thrown together by a beginner. no one will return with food like that
Awesome wine dinner!! Great food and service. Can't wait for the next one on December 9th.
We shared the tuna appetizer which was very good. For our main course we had the filet and strip steaks which were both absolutely fabulous.
Great Staff
