I can’t recommend the Alternative Baker enough! The lemon cakes, boules, focaccia, and egg sandwiches are all to die for, plus whatever fresh goodies Essell has in the case. This is a true from scratch bakery that uses the highest quality ingredients available. We’ve been coming here for the past 10 or so years and love everything Essell creates… so much so that we asked him to make our wedding cake for 200 people! He was great to work with and put a creative spin on our cake… 3 tiers, 4 layers, each with a different flavor of frosting. It was by the far the best cake I’ve ever eaten. A trip to Rosendale is not complete without a visit to The Alternative Baker! And if you’re lucky enough to get warm bread out of the oven, do yourself a favor and get two loaves because one will be gone on the car ride home.
Vegetarian options: The egg sandwiches and freshly made sandwiches are great for vegetarians. Extremely high quality ingredients and excellent flavor!

Essel made me the most moist and delicious vegan carrot cake for my birthday! I had been craving it ever since I scored a cupcake one weekend a few months back and he really delivered an incredible treat for my special day. Thank you Essel! I’m going to get the vegan devils food with ganache next year :P

DO NOT GO HERE. This place looks like it hasn’t had foot traffic in years. How and why is this allowed? This man disrespects people beyond belief . Literally am repulsed after looking at the reviews after my experience. What in the world! What business owner chases a trans person out of their store?! What business owner says children should be snuffed at birth?? WHAT?!?!?! Delusional. Sir, you need to seek help.

Rudest encounter. worker seemed annoyed that I had a gift card in which I received when donating otherwise I’d never consider ever trying the place. First time here and would never go back. Spoke to others who’ve stated the exact same thing but thought I’d still give it a chance. Never again! In addition, place looked DIRTY, like there hasn’t been someone in there in months. He also used his bare hands touching the cheese, no gloves, didn’t wash his hands etc. Along leaving, he was mumbling words like a crazy person. I threw the “sandwich” out immediately. What a disgusting, unprofessional, human to say the things he says. The reviews and his responses tell you all you need to know.

Never really open, assortment of items is always hit or miss. Payment options are weird (PayPal or cash?)

The food was amazing! I had the egg sandwich on an olive mini focaccia made the "house" way, with mustard and NY cheddar cheese --it was DELICIOUS! I also recommend the chia latte. On top of the food being delicious, Essell the chef and owner has create such a fun and welcoming environment. My friends and I ate our breakfast and stayed in the bakery of nearly 3 hours conversing in conversation with Essell and other members of the community that stopped in. Truly so such a fun experience and we felt very welcomed into the Rosendale community! Thank you all!

Stopped by here during a weekend get away around the area. We ordered a tea cake, muffin, focaccia, cider, and the cioccolato, which were all super fresh and delicious. The owner, Essell, is incredibly friendly - we ended up chatting with him for half an hour about everything and anything. A real treat as we explored high falls.

You have to meet the owner, an interesting man
Gluten free products look awful. Older man working there super rude. don’t bother stopping by.

Went into today looking for lemon cakes as I've really enjoyed them in the past. Disappointed to say the least as it was 12p on a Saturday and there were none and limited other items to select. To make matters worse the attitude we were met with was "I'd wish you'd asked before I got up" as the owner was seated in an adjacent room and needed to get up to serve us. Won't bother going again.
didn’t catch his name, but the guy in there is very nice and great to talk to :) we just got coffee this time, but will be back to try food!
Excellent food, great service. Warm hospitality and lovely conversation
rude and violent owner, not lgbtq+ friendly
Such a warm friendly place, the baked goods never disappoint and the egg sandwiches are the best in the county!!
