A hip coffee shop in Beachwood!? What!? And it’s part of a growing chain?

Can’t be. It simply cannot.

I was raised in the Village of Beachwood from the age of 3 and I knew Beachwood as an exclusive Cleveland suburb that didn’t permit commercial enterprises to operate within its boundaries. Didn’t know why, but I accepted that.

It changed a little as I traveled through my teens and 20s, but the types of businesses permitted eventually were small offices and a ritzy shopping mall.

At age 26 I was recruited to a big advertising agency in New York—my dream! I toiled there, and eventually founded my own agency. For 50 years I’d periodically pay my parents and relatives quick weekend Cleveland visits. My trips were quick in and outs.

I moved back a few weeks ago. Beachwood has blossomed, bloomed, become beautified! And my favorite bud on the blossoming Beachwood tree is a coffee house at Cedar & Richmond called the Nervous Dog. (The creative name drew me in first. There are no dogs or canine remnants on the premises.)

Uniquely, it’s a no cash establishment. Bring a credit card or, as I do, use Apple Pay.

The coffee concoctions, each prepared especially for you, are supreme.

There are plenty light foods to choose from too, if you’re so inclined. I grab breakfast here. The toasted Asiago bagel with cream cheese is just to my liking. (I’m a creature of habit.)

The atmosphere is, bougie, food and drink delish, the crowd bohemian and clean.

I love it here. Starbucks might churn out java like it’s spreadsheet fuel, but this place? It brews personality by the cup. It's part café, part Council of Cool—and no, they don’t serve anything with your name half-misspelled on one side of your cup scribbled with a magic maker.

Nice coffee shop, you wouldn't know it's there unless you knew it was there, good selection of sandwiches made to order, just a note, they do not take cash which I thought was a little odd, also, The couple times I got a hot latte there, the latte was more lukewarm than hot. there are some tables outside on the patio for outdoor sitting.

The ONLY place to get coffee in Cleveland!! Rotating coffee bean flavors & several syrup flavors (with sugar free options!!) make each trip an opportunity to try something new. They have seasonal drink options that are absolutely delicious. Spring time brings the vanilla lavender latte, and in the fall the REAL pumpkin latte (made with pumpkin purée) is unreal. Nervous Dog is the place for coffee, good vibes, and delicious sandwiches too!

I don't know who owns this place, but I want to thank them for the quality of the coffee and the general atmosphere of the place. I studied in Cleveland for two years from 2021 to 2022, and this coffee bar was my place to study and relax, and even the staff were wonderful. I used to drink their cortado every day, it was wonderful.

Met a friend for coffee, they made my drink correctly but made my friends drink with whole milk instead of oat milk. When she politely asked if it was oat milk the barista made a comment along the lines of “so you stood here this whole time and never said anything” The barista was SOOOO incredibly rude. We had no idea she was making a drink for our order. Proceeded to make snippy comments, will not be going back here completely appalled how we were treated. Unfriendly staff and would rather take my business elsewhere.

Very rude staff. They made my drink wrong and got mad at me that they had to make it again and proceeded to make rude comments.

Feels like an old-skool 2nd-wave coffee house. The coffee is a 6, maybe 7 out of 10, but the cozy feeling inside (or “vibe,” to use the parlance of our time) gives one nostalgia for the 1990s. And on that note, I approve.
