No food while they are remodeling but they didn't mind if we ordered a pizza for delivery

I rarely leave reviews, but I feel like someone has to say this: shut it down until the renovations are done.

The smell hits you as soon as you walk in—like moldy socks mixed with mothballs. It’s genuinely unhealthy and makes you wonder what’s growing behind the walls. On top of that, I saw cockroaches running across the floor. Please, call an exterminator.

The women’s bathroom is a disaster. The floor is uneven and feels like it’s falling apart. It’s honestly a safety hazard. The whole place feels like an unfinished basement, not a welcoming bar. If this is supposed to be a functioning business, it’s completely unacceptable.

My advice? Pay your employees to take time off until renovations are complete. It’s not fair to them or your customers to keep the doors open in this condition. Unless you’re aiming for a “haunted horror bar” vibe, there’s no excuse.

Also—watch your step. There are random old boards and debris from demo work just lying around. One wrong move, and someone’s going to get hurt.

WE USE TO COME ALMOST EVERY FRIDAY AND MOST DEFINITELY EVERY SATURDAY FOR MANY YEARS UNTIL THE NEW OWNER TOOK OVER WITH THE RACIST COMMENTS/REMARKS. THE STAFF (WTH THE EXCEPTION OF THE NEW DOOR BOY) ARE ALL GREAT AND I LOVE THEM ALL DEARLY! WITH THE SMUG ATTITUDE, THIS IS WHY SEVERAL PEOPLE KEEP WALKING IN AND WALKING RIGHT BACK OUT! ‘ONLY CERTAIN TYPES OF MUSIC CAN BE PLAYED’ EVEN ON THE JUKEBOX WHERE PEOPLE INSERT THEIR MONEY THEIR SONGS ARE SKIPPED! WOW! DISGUSTING! AND THIS IS WHY YOUR BAR IS EMPTY ON A WEEKEND IN THE SUMMER, WHY YOURE TRYING TO RAISE YOUR DRINK PRICES TO COMPENSATE FOR THE BUSINESS YOURE ABOUT TO LOSE! SAD!

I’ve been a regular at The Village Tavern for quite some time, both during the day and night, and I’m disappointed by the direction the bar has taken since the new owner took over.

The most obvious change? The music. All rap has been removed from the TouchTunes, which feels like a targeted and racially motivated decision. Music is a huge part of the bar’s atmosphere, and the exclusion of an entire genre—one that’s deeply rooted in Black culture—is not just tone-deaf, it’s outright discriminatory.

Beyond the music, it’s clear that the new owner doesn’t care about the regulars who have supported this place for years. Whether it’s the daytime crowd or the late-night regulars, we’re being ignored in favor of changes that do nothing to improve the bar’s community vibe.

To make matters worse, the bar stayed open during heavy construction. No one wants to enjoy a drink while breathing in dust and debris. It’s not just unprofessional, it’s unhealthy—and shows a lack of concern for both customers and staff.

The bartenders, especially the good ones who’ve built strong relationships with customers, are now at risk of losing money and loyal patrons because of these poor decisions. The direction this place is heading in feels like a step backward, not forward.

This bar used to feel like home for a lot of people. Sadly, under the current ownership, it’s becoming a place many no longer want to support.

I’ve been coming to this bar for 25 years. It’s never been about polish — the charm was always in the grit. A place with real history, dating back to the 1860s. It wore its past like a badge: former brothel, eternal dive, and proud outlier in a zip code that polishes its sidewalks twice a day.

This was the spot you went when you were tired of curated experiences and just wanted something real. Sticky floors, questionable regulars, and a jukebox that somehow understood heartbreak better than most therapists.

But things change. The new ownership seems more interested in managing perception than preserving character. Watching the new owner sit at the bar and skip songs mid-play said everything. Imagine paying to play a song in a public bar, only for it to be vetoed by a man who collected the money you paid.

There’s a certain smug righteousness in thinking you can keep the shell of a place while gutting its soul. I wish them well, but they’ve traded something irreplaceable for control.

I won’t be back. Some ghosts aren’t meant to be domesticated.

Me and my gf tried to request songs and the DJ refused saying the owner is not allowed hip hop. Dance floor is dead. We closed our tab and left
