Some of the finest bread I have ever eaten in North America or in Europe. Their European Rye is extraordinary and it also keeps very well.

If you have never stopped here, go! The bread and pastry is unbelievable. I personally love the rye bread and cinnamon rolls. It's a bakery, so the atmosphere is just that.

I love quirky old bakeries with a great reputation and thought I’d order my husband’s birthday cake there two days before. The person in charge of cakes who took my order did not seem happy about my ordering two days before it was needed, so I recommend ordering several days before. They don’t do quarter sheets so I ordered the next smallest—a 10” 3-layer round. I asked if they have almond flavored cake and butter cream icing, but she said that she would only do a pudding whipped cream blend frosting (that ended up tasting like it had been sitting in the bakery a little too long). The cake was 60% frosting, 40% cake. It had a decent strawberry filling. The cake person was very unfriendly and never made eye contact. There was no price sheet so I was shocked when she seemed to just throw out the price of 50 bucks. I expected to pay $30-40. Nobody in the family liked the taste of the cake at all—thought it tasted “weird”. I was so disappointed. I was hoping to start giving my business to this little hole-in-the-wall family bakery instead of our local grocery chain, but never again.

Went yesterday to grab some bread to go with dinner, couldn’t help but get a chocolate croissant as well for breakfast the next day. The bread was soft and fresh and the chocolate croissant I just had with my coffee was AMAZING.

I’m extremely disappointed and disgusted with the product being sold at Heinen’s from this bakery, particularly the poppyseed bread. I purchased the poppyseed bread with an expiration date three days away, but when I went to eat it the day of purchase, I found MOLD ALL OVER THE BOTTOM OF THE BREAD. I returned it and informed customer service that selling moldy food is unacceptable. They assured me they would report the issue to the bakery.

However, just a week later, I visited Heinen’s for groceries and out of curiosity went to look at the poppyseed bread…. Shockingly, every poppyseed bread was covered in mold- both top and bottom- even though they weren’t expired. This is unacceptable to sell products that arrive moldy on the day of new shipment. Many customers, especially elderly ones, might only check the expiration date and miss the visible mold.
This isn’t the first time I’m seeing this since my incident.. Every time I visit Heinen’s, I seem to notice the same issue with the item and I’ve repeatedly informed the workers out of respect to customers, to take these moldy breads off the shelf, which leads to them consistently saying they will report it to the bakery, but nothing seems to change. Clearly, the reporting process isn’t effective, and the moldy bread continues to be sold. While I don’t believe this is Heinen’s fault whatsoever, the bakery supplying these products is to blame. Selling moldy food puts people at risk of food poisoning. Please take action to ensure this issue is resolved and that the moldy products are no longer being supplied to Heinen’s.
