Went for lunch on a weekend and had the best time thanks to our server Gina. She knew what I wanted before I did! She was so pleasant and absolutely amazing. She made my day. Food was good, too. :)

Great German style restaurant on the main street in Oxford. Food and service were both very good. Try the reuben sandwich and jalapeno blood mary.

Decided to take the family out for dinner and since I was born in Germany I had to come here. Was packed but understood so it was a little bit of a wait to get a table. That was fine it was once we sat down the problems started. 1 menu for 6 people. The waiter with long blond hair said he would be back with more. Never did. A half an hour goes by before we even get water and our drink/meal order taken. Get the appetizer….pretzel is amazing! And the German beer is to die for. Those 2 things are the only reason I am giving 2 stars. After an hour and a half we have empty drinks and no mains yet. An hour and a half. Not one time did our waiter come to our table asking if we wanted anything more or refills in an hour and a half. We finally ask our waiter, and even that took 10-15 minutes to get his attention, where our food is and we get told we are third in line. At this point we have been there the longest of any other table and we are somehow still third in line? When every other table had come in after us and were already getting their food and we are third in line. We just ask for the bill at this point and go somewhere else for dinner. Pretzel and beer is good. That’s all I can say. But the service sucked from our waiter and ruined ever wanting to come back and try again.

I have dined at Steinkeller since my first year at Miami University in 2010 and it's always worth the trip down the stairs.
German inspired cuisine with plenty of American flair and an impressive drink list. The decor is fun (wenn du Deutsch kann, der Maler könnte nicht 🤭🤫) and the staff is amazing! I always get moist and delicious schnitzel. I miss their bacon vinaigrette dressing days but the new brunch weekends get a big thumbs up! Pork schnitzel on home fries with sausage gravy and a fried egg, omg so good.
I hope Gina is there when I next visit, she has an amazing energy and I knew she was going to serve me only tasty food.

What a gem of a place, especially if you like beer or German food. I personally grew up around a lot of German culture, and learned the language at a young age, and this little basement feels like home in an odd way.

If you're not a drinker, the food is more than enough reason to come here. Their schnitzels are legitimately pretty authentic, and the pretzels are perfect.

I'm not kidding when I say that if you're not familiar with German food and nothing catches your eye, their burgers are great. Go visit for a burger and some beer, if nothing else.

On the topic of beer, there's legitimately nothing that rivals this place anywhere near us. The owner (who unfortunately passed away, I think, and his wife now runs the place) used to travel overseas to sample drafts, and import his favorites. That practice has made the beer menu worth coming for alone, even if you don't plan on eating. (You have to at least get a pretzel though, right?)

If the German beer menu is a little overwhelming, their descriptions of the beer in English is superb, and the wait staff is EXTREMELY patient and normally quite willing to discuss beer recommendations with you. I'm personally very fond of Paulaner Salvator, Andechs Dunkel Weißbier und Kostritzer Schwarzbier.

Fantastic place for a date night or celebration. Go try it.

More stars needed. Best German food I’ve ever had. What else is there to say?

I ordered their regular wiener schnitzel and was disappointed when they brought out a fried chicken cutlet. It wasn't bad it's just not wiener schnitzel. Wiener schnitzel is pretty unanimously made with veal so I'm not sure why they think it's ok to scam they're customers. I would've been ok with it if the menu mentioned it was made with chicken or if they called it what it is, hähnchenschnitzel. I also had the hungover fries which I've had previously. Both times were pretty good but both times it was very salty because the bacon adds a lot of extra salt that I dont think the chefs are accounting for. Service was slow but everyone was very nice and excited.

Really enjoyed the food and atmosphere here. The beer is good as well!

My kids were worried walking down into a scary looking basement area, but the moment we walked in the door their fears washed away. It was inviting, warm, and friendly. Food was great, but very meat-heavy which made it tough for the vegetarians in the group. Service was awesome - I don’t remember his name, but he had long hair and gave us lots of good info about the area and the university.

This place is really bad our drinks took about 30 minutes to get and they put to much syrup in all of the drinks the food took about 1 and a half hours to get and the steaks were charred when we asked for medium rare and they couldn’t even eat it and the sausage was completely raw and the server was really rude and we didn’t get a single refill the entire two hours we were there we had the server with the long blond hair don’t come here if you want good steak or not raw sausage

I love german food and always try new places as I find them. I happened to be in Oxford and decided to try steinkeller. I got the chicken kasespatzle and it was only okay. The spatzle and peppers/ onions were delicious but the chicken was poorly cooked. It was like chewing gum it was so tough. For 22 dollars I would expect better. Overall an OK meal.
