This place is actually located in the Love's gas station's convenience store. But the fried chicken fingers are so good. In fact, we got them once for a dinner and then we bought another round to carry on our hike up Mount Huron. This is not a place to write home about in terms of ambiance - but the food is a treat!
Tons of Food for the price and it was AWESOME. The wait was worth it. Great when the campsite was rained out.
It is really hard to get good chicken around here and Chester's is no exception. Reason being; at 8000 feet water boils at 195 degrees Fahrenheit, not at 212 degrees like at sea level. The same is true for grease, vegetable oil, lard, etc. Therefore, when you cook something in boiling oil, you must cook it at least a few minutes longer. For chicken, about 3 to 5 minutes. We constantly get chicken, especially breasts that are still bleeding next to the bone. This is nauseating and disgusting. When I mention this to store employees, I always get the same answer. "Corporate tells us how long to cook it." Or "We can't change settings on the fryers." Corporate needs to learn that high altitude cooking is different and if you want repeat customers, you must change the way you cook.
The chicken I bought here was fairly generic fried chicken, and a bit oversalted, but still tasty. However, a big attraction is that it is open 24 hours. (Hear that, all you mountain climbers that love Buena Vista for its high Rockies location? If you want a chicken fix before assaulting that peak you need to be on before sunrise, this is one place that will fill the bill. I promise that I won't tell any of your friends about your preclimbing culinary habits.) One complaint I had was that there was a mixup with my order that I didn't catch before heading out the door. However, it was probably just as good as what I did order, so I didn't dock them for that in this review.
