The slightly tough beef and the dry grilled chicken made for one of the most enjoyable authentic Mexican food meals I have had in Tulsa. Damn Good!Knowing that Don Pollo is located in the heart of little Mexico, I came prepared to bridge my poor Spanish communications skills with the use of a picture on my phone. Sometimes I can roll my r's and sometimes I can't. A picture always works. The picture was of a beautiful plate of food called Parrillada. Two orders. This is a small authentic Mexican restaurant. No Diet Cokes here, so water it is. They have every other sugary soda you could think of though. I surprised the owner with a request for salsa picante. At first, he thought I was asking if the salsa was hot. He assured me that the salsa was not hot. I clarified that I wanted some salsa picante. This really surprised him. He went behind the counter and brought green and red plastic bottles to the table and issued a warning to indemnify the restaurant from any personal injuries I may receive. The salsa was pleasantly hot. The plate of Parrillada was as beautiful as it was delicious. I wanted to try a good variety of their meats and this was the plate to order. A big bowl of excellent charro beans, a chili toreado, a grilled green onion, a slice of thin flank steak, a thinly sliced section of beef plate ribs, a grilled chunk of chicken breast, a big section of grilled sausage, pickled onions and lettuce, and the rice occupied the remaining space. Magnificent! Yes, the beef was a little chewy as it should be and the chicken was a little dry, but the taste was wonderful. My wife struggled to segment the steak into bite sized pieces. She was not quite as enthusiastic as I was about the meal. The flavorful chicken is the house specialty, order a whole one with the excellent sausage and a bowl of the well-seasoned Charro beans, for a perfect authentic meal. The owner a very personable, friendly guy delivered flawless hospitality and attention to our needs. The restaurant is the quintessential example of a small hole in the wall mom and pop operation. A very clean, but well-worn interior, very limited seating. One of the repurposed booths bares the name from its previous duty in a business called the Iron Horse. Exquisite décor and atmosphere, it is not. Excellent authentic Mexican food, served in a comfortable little restaurant with good service, it is!
