“After a recommendation from a local, I decided to give this place a try instead of going to my usual spot when visiting Woodward. The vehicle I was driving was a little on the large side, so finding a parking spot took some effort. Once I did, I made a quick walk to the front of the building and went inside.

Right away, I could tell this was a historical place—probably a building that’s over a hundred years old. You can just feel that it used to be an important spot. That’s why what I’m about to say feels a little disappointing: the décor of the restaurant does not reflect the elegance or history of the building. Such a missed opportunity! They could have used the architecture to their advantage when decorating, but instead, the place has that classic late ’90s, early 2000s Mexican restaurant look—bright colors, flowers everywhere, and loud décor that went out of style about a decade ago. A simple refresh with a more modern and elegant touch would truly make this place stand out and complement the food.

On the food side, I had already been recommended the molcajete, so I didn’t spend too much time with the menu. But during the brief moment I looked at it—wow. Once again, the all-too-familiar “typical Mexican restaurant menu” with what feels like a hundred different options. Honestly, it’s overwhelming. It almost feels like the customer is being punished, reading and reading just to find something to order.

I always tell restaurants: having too many dishes isn’t necessarily a good thing. Sure, it looks impressive, but in reality, people tend to order the same few classics, while the rest of the items rarely get picked. That means a lot of ingredients for those forgotten dishes might just sit in the fridge for too long.

If I could make a suggestion—it would be to narrow down the menu. Pick the 25 most-ordered dishes and design a simple, easy-to-read menu with modern photos of each. Then, from those, select the 12 most popular for a focused lunch menu. That would make things more efficient for both the kitchen and the customer.

After placing my molcajete order, they brought out chips and salsa, which were really good—especially the red salsa. Amazing! While waiting, I went to wash my hands and check out the restroom area. That’s when I noticed something odd: the space next door is also being used by the restaurant. The dining room we were in was half the size of the one next door, but that second room was completely empty. There was even a bar with no bartender or customers. Maybe it was just the time of day, or maybe they only use it on weekends—but it felt strange to walk into such an empty area.

As for the bathrooms, they were painted a bright, sloppy mix of yellow and red, and not very clean. There was also a persistent, unpleasant odor that was hard to pinpoint. The bathroom looked clean at first glance, but the smell made it uncomfortable to stay in there.

Back at the table, I focused on my business meeting with a colleague and tried to enjoy the meal—and to be fair, the food was good. It was decent overall, and I especially loved the tortillas. So, points for that.

This place definitely has potential. Fix the menu, freshen up the décor, and embrace the charm of the historic building—and you’d have something really special here.“
