Captain Jack or Captain Abdi? It can’t be the same great taste when it’s now all FROZEN (aka lazy)
Of course when new owners take over they cut the fish size and even worse give you frozen fries - this place is now terrible!
Sadly it’s no longer an Authentic Canadian eatery. Go to Golden Fish and Chips on Woolwich and taste what fresh means!

So this used to be my favourite fish and chips place just tried it out with the new owner and not going back the fries were overcooked and not good the fish taste different than what I was used to. Going in to pick it up sure looks so plain. I sure will miss the original owners for this place and will not be buying any food from here ever again.

I'm not sure how this can happen to a good fish and chips joint. My French fries broke in half with fork. I'm from the East and never tasted fish like this. Unusual taste and ultimately throo it in the garbage. Hopefully I don't get sick from couple bites. Please don't Waste The Time And Money Of Honest People Looking For A Descent Meal. Stopped for lunch today at Captain Jacks.. food was amazing (even the gluten friendly fish and chips), friendly staff, and was clean inside. Even the portion size/price was great. Grateful for this find. We’ll be back!

Terrible fish and chip ever had in my life.
Can't even deserve 1 star.
Ordered halibut and was not giving the right fish, the fish tasted like it came from the speed river. It's under new management more expensive and smaller portions, also different recipe as well, this use to be the best spot in guelph for fish n chip it a shame
Overall good meal, but not as good as under the previous management. Fish was a little undercooked, as the batter was not crispy yet (or maybe the old style batter was better?). Size of the fish was about 60% of the previous fillets. Coleslaw was good, but the container is smaller than before, and even then was only half filled (2 heaping tablespoons at the most). Decent, but a downgrade from what it was.

Just got a work lunch here today, in total about 7 different orders. Took about 45 minutes for all to be cooked, not bad but not a single order was warm when I picked up.
With that being said, flavor was meh. The fish has almost no flavor, fries were cold and soggy and the Tarter Sauce was super runny.
The number one thing that turned me off though... COOKING IN FLIP FLOPS WITH NO SOCKS!!!! WHO DOES THAT?! Absolutely disgusting.
There are many changes that need to be made before I ever go back.
Not worth the price.

Went here after the new owners took over. Hoped it wouldn't lose any quality than the previous owner and was pleasantly surprised. Kitchen was a little slow but nothing a pre order pick up won't fix. Great lunch special fish n chips for $10.99 + Tax.
Will be going back!

Went here yesterday specifically for the gluten free fish and chips. They did not disappoint. Very light, crispy, not oily, batter.
Old school place with old school decor. Banqutte seating was very comfortable. Restaurant was clean, and the service was friendly. Will come back any time we are in Guelph.

We have been happy customers if Captain Jack’s for years.
They recently changed ownership. The quality of the food we have come to expect just wasn’t there. So disappointing. The fish was small portions and a thin coating of batter. The little containers of coleslaw were half filled. The tartar sauce was runny. For what you pay, we expect better. We won’t be back

I popped in here since I was pining for some fish and chips, and I will say I was pleasantly surprised.
The atmosphere feels a bit stark with very little personality - but it was very comfortable and welcoming. I wasnt sure if it was a sit down restaurant or a takeout place, but the gentlemen who was there said I could sit. The menu had quite a lot of options, but I did go with the creamy chowder and the one piece beer battered haddock and chips. I was even offered a complimentary coffee! (Which was SUPER good. Definitely recommend.)
The chowder was a bit to be desired, and had a shrimp shell in it and the potatoes weren't cooked through enough. The fish and chips though - MY GOD THE FISH AND CHIPS. Best fries I've had with my fish in a while. Wholley recommend getting the haddock.
The malt vinegar did come in the individual packets which threw me off but it wasnt a huge problem.
Overall I was extremely satisfied, and he even gave me a coupon for 10% off my next visit. Definitely coming back here!

We really enjoyed a quick lunch here, grabbing the halibut two piece and the fish tacos. My partner tried the gluten free batter and was impressed, and I enjoyed both his tartar sauce and my fish tacos. Tasty, crispy, fresh toppings too. Cons: The decor is a bit bland. Timing wise, our dishes were about 10 minutes apart and we were the only guests sitting. That said, we will definitely be back for takeout to enjoy at home. Happy to see this place re-imagined!
