This is one of the best and healthiest vegan eateries in Hamilton. Unfortunately it is closing after this long weekend after over 8 yrs of going strong. Tons of healthy vegan options and always served with a smile. This place will be missed.
I have ordered at Green Bar before, but that was delivery. This time, I went to the actual restaurant, and let me tell you, my experience was bad.
When we entered, there was nobody at the front desk, but there were two people eating so we assumed the cashier was busy, but he was sitting right there, and did not even greet us, tell us where the menu was, or anything. He was extremely disorganised. I had to repeat my order to him around 4-5 times for him to finally understand what all I was ordering. He kept mumbling, and he was just not a great person for the job. I had to use the restroom, so I went downstairs, where he indicated they were. It was extremely sketchy down there. There was so much junk everywhere, and the “restroom” was in this dirty storage room which had a urinal on one side, and a toilet on the other. The whole place itself was not very well maintained.
I ordered the Grilled Cheez, and Smashed Chick/Avocado Sandwich with a side of Sweet Potatoes. After we got into our car and opened the food, we realised that the cashier had made a mistake. Instead of giving us a Grilled Cheez, he gave us what seemed to be the Bayfront Breakfast, and he did not give us the side of Sweet Potatoes. At the end, I was craving some drinks, so I took one of the Kombuchas, and a Chocolate Protein Drink from the refrigerated beverage area, and we were charged around $32 for that! It would have probably costed $10-13 at maximum according to the prix labels they had. The cashier realised only after we asked him why he was charging so much money, and he took an extremely long time to bill it.
Despite all of this confusion, the food was actually really tasty. I am always happy to see a restaurant with so many vegan menu items, and I loved the food here. The Smashed Chick/Avo Sandwich had a lot of sourness in it because of the tomatoes, chickpeas, and pickled onions, but the warm, buttered sourdough bread with avocado spread balanced it out well. I was upset about not getting the Grilled Cheez I ordered, but the Bayfront Breakfast was spectacular! The tempeh ‘bacon’ was marvellous, and the tofu scramble resembled scrambled eggs so well! I did not get a chance to taste the fruit compote, but I am sure it would have been delicious with the toast. The Kombucha I bought was the Ultraviolet Kombucha which was refreshing and tasty!
This has been quite a long review, but there was certainly a lot to mention. I unfortunately forgot to take photos in the chaos, but the food really was scrumptious. I desperately want to try other menu items here again, but the absolutely terrible service is keeping me from doing that. I would have indeed given a higher rating if it wasn’t for that. To conclude, I have a lot of mixed feelings about Green Bar.
Vegetarian options: Everything is vegan, so it is automatically vegetarian friendly.
Parking: There is free street parking, but hard to find spots.
Kid-friendliness: There is a kids menu.
Wheelchair accessibility: The interior is pretty small, so I am not sure how wheelchair friendly it is.

I love all the food, and drinks at the green bar!
Driving through and grabbed lunch here. The server suggested this meal for a GF person, I can’t remember the name but it was a hash brown bowl with tempeh bacon and scrambled tofu and was delicious and spicy. Portion was very good. Server was super nice.

I’m not sure if it was an off day or what but usually the food is great which is why I paid and tipped right away but the grilled cheese was not grilled and cold when it came out. The caesar salad was not tossed and kale was very limp not fresh or crunchy at all. I was offered to make a new grilled cheese in place of the current one but after not enjoying the soup or salad I didn’t want anything else. I was offered nothing to come back or a refund of any kind. Being in the service industry working as a server and manager in many cuisines over the years this was not a good experience and sadly I have no reason to go back.
I've been to many vegan restaurants inside and outside of Hamilton, not gonna lie it was the poorest tasting vegan food thus far for me.
Seitan chicken sandwich (3/10) was dry, heavily relying on the tomato's juice for moisture, while the seitan itself tasted like... just seitany (very noticeably squishy without much taste). The sandwich tasted mainly of buns.
The caesar salad was the most bland dry salad I've ever tasted in my life (1/10). The cashew dressing's mild taste is lost within loads of kale (which ends up being all you can taste). To make matters worse, there was an upcharge of $3 for this salad that wasn't mentioned on the website's menu (see picture) or over the phone so kinda salty I paid extra for that instead of just the homefries.
If I can give some suggestions I advise upping the sauce game in your menu items because it really brought down my experience paying $21 for that quality of food, like it was honestly the first vegan restaurant's food I actually found unappetizing. Also, add the extra fees for upgrading sides on your website's menu and when ordering over the phone. I don't want to write this place off from one bad experience (especially if the type of menu is supposed to be more "healthier/natural" food that just doesn't hit well for me) but seeing in comparison what similar items I've had at other vegan restaurants in Hamilton (Odd Burger, Hearty Hooligan, Democracy, Rise Above etc) I probably won't give it another try.
The staff were nice though.

Completely understaffed and slow. There is one poor man taking orders, serving food, answering the phone, and clearing tables. The place is packed. Several people who ordered after us received and finished their food and left. I’m pregnant and started to feel faint waiting 30+ minutes, so I had to eat a granola bar while waiting. Then someone who ordered the same item as me, well after I ordered received her meal. That was the last straw so we left and asked for a refund. They are out of multiple items as well. Completely ridiculous. I am pregnant and was looking for a healthy meal while traveling. I ended up having to eat at Taco Bell.

I went in and ordered to go. I waited over 40 minutes in an almost empty restaurant for an OG bowl that cost almost $30 with a can of sparkling water.
Great lunch. Ordered the falafel bowl. The staff was really attentive and sweet and the playlist that was on was excellent.Definitely recommend for a filling, healthy and yummy lunch.

Very inconsistent. Every time I order a smoothie it seems different. Today my smoothie was entirely berries with no flavour whatsoever..I don't think I will come back. It's happened a few times

I was excited at the premise of a yummy smoothy and have being planning a trip outat that it was pretty tasty… but the portion size is diminutive, with $9.95 getting you a 16oz smoothie which feels like a wholesale ripoff, not to mention the atmosphere is surface level with front of house and blender staff starring at each other shrugging looking absolutely bewildered, and on top of that the foh worker handed me 5.25 after I handed them 15 and they had quoted me my bill of 11.25After inquiring friends who have worked for green bar I was informed that they have a long history of abusing staff and quote“running through gm faster than a pro skater goes through vans”Upon stepping into the establishment the stark white interior remenicent of anywhere but Hamilton met with the strange uncomfortable staff members I suggest if you can’t get to a booster juice this should be low on the list of places to get interesting drinks in Hamilton Ontario, with great cafes like mulberry feeling like a wholesome 3rd place which I have many great memories
Kid-friendliness: They would cry at the overwhelming sense of dread eminating from the establishment
Wheelchair accessibility: Poor with a stairwell to the bathroom

I ordered a falafel bowl today and although it was initially tasty, I ended up having to throw it out. I found NUMEROUS strands of hair in my food. I will not be back.
