Always great food, drinks and service! Some of my favourite beers are brewed by these fine folks.
Giving a two star review because the service was good and the staff was friendly. The food that we ordered, however, was absolutely atrocious. We ordered two sausages, and if you know anything about food/cooking, the way in which they're prepared defies all cooking skill. The sausage was crumbly (meaning the meat was not worked enough to create a classic sausage texture) and didn't have a good snap like a natural pork casing sausage should have. The sausage meat itself was also quite dry. The buns were toasted on the OUTSIDE rather than the inside, which were then smeared with wet ingredients. This left the buns to become a soggy, disastrous mess, splitting in half after the first couple of bites. The flavour overall was okay, but not worth the mess, and absolutely not worth $15 each. For this price, I'm expecting very high quality for something so simple. You can get a significantly better sausage eating experience at denningers, or, if you really want great value, head to your local Costco.
The beer selection is good, and a lot of the beers offered are also good. Just do not go for the sausages, they were a massive disappointment.

Great mix of in house made sausages with unique flavour combinations that keeps me coming back for more! The beer is on point (with a solid mix of everything from easy drinking lagers, top notch IPAs, even the odd Belgian or Dark

Not a bad spot. You have to go to the bar to order so service is ok. The atmosphere was nothing impressive. Fries were good I would suggest ordering them. All beers were very strong.

Good beer. Good atmosphere. Popped in for a visit before dinner down the street for a tasting as part of a weekend of events and had a lot of fun.

Hamilton has so many amazing gems on James street and this is one of them. An amazing and delicious beer selection, great atmosphere, lovely rear lane patio - really enjoyed it. I tried all of their stock and found them all unique and flavourful, the sour was fruity and nicely citrused but not bitter, the lager was crisp - highly rexommend and will be sure to visit next time I'm in town.

Rude service for no reason. I visited Merit for the first time during Super Crawl a few weeks ago excited to order the grandad donuts on special, and possibly more. After ordering they were given to me in paper serving boats, and I asked if I could have them to go instead. The server threw a box in front of me, and when I looked at him confused he replied “I’m not doing that for you”. No tongs were offered, so I had to package them with my hands. Listen, I’m used to packaging my own doggy bag - at least there’s cutlery. Again, as a first time experience, this was both weird and unnecessarily rude. It turned me off from ordering more food and beverages.
I understand the challenges of serving, I worked in the service industry for over a decade, but even with the rudest patrons I found more diplomatic ways to say “I’m not doing that for you”. I’m going to assume that I caught him on an off day (Super Crawl must’ve been especially busy), but since the company makes a big deal about values on their website, they should make sure their servers actually display them.

Beer is always excellent, and the food is genuinely inspired! Hadn’t been in a few years and if anything it’s only gotten better with time.
