Beautiful little Restaurant with excellent food and nice atmosphere. Perfect for celebrations or special meals when on vacation. Right in the heart of down town, near to city hall. Non touristy.

Best poutine I've ever had. 10/10 worth going for

Great food and waiters but the manager was horribly rude. Would not return. I made a reservation and they claimed I did not and blamed me. They didn't feel bad at all and made us sit outside in the winter on the cold patio. It's a shame because the food was good

First review for me, but the service was so good that I had to mention it. Went for dinner, food was very good but service was outstanding. Special thanks to Evans for being so honest in his recommandations!

Just an FYI- I believe they've officially changed their name to black dog tavern. Regardless of the name I loved it here. The place is nice with brick walls and an embossed tin ceiling. They've put plexiglass in between the booths and tables for Covid and a sanitizer dispenser at the door. I had oysters and some fabulous fried chicken that came with an in-house made sweet hot sauce that was sooo good. Our server was nice enough to tell us what the ingredients were so I'm going to attempt to duplicate it. I did have to send back the potato salad because the potatoes were still rock hard. They replaced it with some (frozen type) fries that were fine but didn't compare to the chicken. Service was great and I'd definitely come back.

Let me preface by saying this is one of the only reviews I have ever left for a restaurant. We went to this restaurant on a date night after not having been to a restaurant in months due to the pandemic. They followed protocol excellently. The food was good overall, however the reason I am leaving a review is because of the service, which was exceptional. Our waitress was so kind. I have to say, she made an error and omitted one of the items we ordered. This has happened to us before and was not a big deal at all. What struck us however was how wonderfully she handled it. She was honest immediately and told us what had happened. She owned up to her mistake. She was extremely apologetic, and spent the rest of the night offering us options to correct her mistake, including offering us the item in question on the house as well as other sweet gestures throughout the service. I have never ever been treated this way by a wait staff. Mistakes have happened before, but never has a waitress gone out of her way like this to make up for a small mistake. We are so grateful for this service and will be coming again because of how pleased we were!

When I saw that they had lobster mac on the menu, I knew I had to try it. It DID NOT disappoint. I was quite shocked by the amount of lobster that was included. The sauce was so creamy and everything just complimented each other perfectly. My boyfriend got the duck confit and it was absolutely delicious. The only thing I would change would be for their cocktail menu to be a bit bigger.

This place never disappoints. We have been eating here for several years now and is always our go to when we have people visiting us from out of town. Staff is always friendly and very accommodating for dietary restrictions.

Small but marvellous place to dine in. The atmosphere is lovely. We booked our anniversary here and were surprised by the service. From entree to dessert the food was mind tickling. I would recommend this place to people who love elegance, taste, and coziness.

Great atmosphere for couples dining, we had oysters to compliment our meal, so a little more expensive than normal, but that was because of the oysters :)

We had a dinner with friends celebrating a birthday. Several of us ordered the calamari starter and all agreed it was the the best we’ve had in the city. I ordered the pork schnitzel as my main and ate only a quarter of it - completely dry and tasteless. Thank goodness it was accompanied by some chutney and aioli to provide some flavour. Two others ordered the club sandwich with salad which they both liked -my husband commented on the tasty house dressing on the salad. The beer prices were reasonable but I thought the wine was pricey for at $16 for 250 gr. We will return but probably more for appetizers and their “happy hour” drinks.

Pretty great, and doing a great job during Covid. The duck confit was especially perfect.

Black Dog Tavern (formerly Chien Noir) has changed their style and menu but the service is still top notch. We had lunch on the patio which is now down an alley and behind the restaurant. No more street noise! Jack was our server and was super. Friendly and efficient. I do miss some of the previous bistro style food but time to move on! I ordered the shrimp rice dish which was delicious and my husband got the schnitzel which was huge. Draught beer and cider also which was a summer time must.

For twenty years, this was our absolute favourite restaurant in Kingston. It was a real bistro, French style, with lots of good food, superior service and excellent wines. We used to have no compunction recommending it to others We were, however, frankly disappointed on our last two visits: Mediocre - almost bad - food, a misleading street menu, indifferent service and generally overpriced. We were considering going back again now that things have started to open up but, after looking at the new menu, have decided we are probably done with this place for good. Any restaurant that proudly emblazons Quote: “F-ing good” Unquote anything on its menu is seriously off course or else just courting the bike gang crowd and that ilk. There are lots of other, clearly superior restaurants in Kingston that offer better dining, with class, taste and sensibility.
