This was my 1st time at Chip+Malt. Definitely not the last!!! My hubby and I had the halibut and chips, with cole slaw. Wow, the thickness of the halibut is incredible and the batter is on point...delicious & not greasy! Robin, our server is was lovely & pleasant. Wonderful atmosphere! We love to support local.

The portion size was small for the money. We asked for crispy fries but they were still not very crispy. The restaurant is deep and you have to wait to be seated but the only server was at the back so it took a while for her to see us. Overall not a very pleasant place.

Chip and Malt – Newmarket’s Go-To Fish & Chip Spot (201 Main St, Newmarket)
Chip and Malt is hands-down our go-to spot for fish and chips in Newmarket. They serve classic English-style fish and chips, and the portions are extremely generous—finishing the fresh-cut fries is a challenge all on its own!
If fish and chips aren’t your thing, no worries—they’ve got plenty of other options. The burgers are excellent (the Big Ben Burger with fries was fantastic), and on our last visit we tried their hand-made ice cream, which was amazing. Not sure if it’s always available, but definitely worth asking about.
The staff are friendly and welcoming, and you can tell it’s a true family-run, old-fashioned style business. Highly recommend! Plus, being right in Downtown Newmarket makes it an even better spot to check out.

Lovely restaurant here on Main St. The food is absolutely delicious, which is evident from the pictures below and the service is fantastic. The lady who served us was just the sweetest. Would definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys fish and chips, and if you don’t, definitely a great place to try.

We really enjoyed our meal here. My family and I ordered the cod and haddock fish and chips, and we were impressed with the portion sizes. The haddock was definitely the highlight of the meal; we all loved it. It's a great spot with excellent food.

I had been to Chip + Malt before and really enjoyed the food, so I was excited to bring my family along to share that same great experience. Unfortunately, this visit was extremely disappointing. We came in as a group of 6 adults and 3 children (2 of them infants), and right from the moment we walked in, the hostess made it very clear we weren’t welcome. She sighed audibly, rolled her eyes, and looked visibly annoyed before checking if they had a table for us. It was uncomfortable and disheartening, especially as we were looking forward to a nice meal together. While I understand that larger groups can be a bit more work to accommodate, there’s absolutely no excuse for treating guests this way. Customer service makes a huge difference, and in this case, it completely soured the experience for us. Sadly, I won’t be recommending Chip + Malt based on this visit, and I’m not sure I’ll be returning.

Horrible experience. We didn’t even get to try the food because of how rude the host was. I came in during Summer Fest with my family and another family—8 of us, excited to finally eat here after hearing good things. Instead, we were met with nothing but attitude.
The host rolled her eyes at us, sighed loudly, checked her watch, and dragged her feet to the stand like we were an inconvenience—even though it was only 6:30 PM, nowhere near closing time. Her body language made it clear she didn’t want us there.
The disrespect was so obvious that we left immediately. If this is the type of staff representing Chip+Malt, it doesn’t matter how good the food is—terrible service ruins it all. We won’t be coming back, and I’ll make sure others know how unprofessional the host was.
The most delicious Halibut, like eating a stake, thick and juicy with a light crispy batter. Paired with a local beer. The vanilla ice cream made from scratch was so good. I highly recommend this place and look forward to returning and trying another item from the extensive menu.

Tried both halibut and haddock, both were good. However the fries were too much and not so fresh at all which made the final result not satisfactory. There was a bad smell in the environment near the kitchen we were seated so we had to ask to be seated away from the kitchen.
