If you’re really trying to decide which place to go in Ottawa, please stop. You found it. This is the one. Al’s Steakhouse is a Canadian original, iconic in stature and unforgettable as a meal experience. I am a Texan so keep in mind my bar for beef is very high. I can say without exaggeration that Al’s Steakhouse in Ottawa Ontario ranks in the Top 10 steakhouses in all of North America.

There is a lot to cover, but they grill on charcoal here. This gives everything a distinct flavor that is absolutely delicious. This is a place to celebrate friendships, romance, business or success. You can hear all the laughter and conversation in the dining room, this place has energy.

We ordered the butchers board, which could easily be for 4, but we were just 2. We did our best to take it down anyways. It was Thick Cut Bacon, 16oz New York Striploin, Lamb Chops, Bone Marrow, Chicken Kabobs, House Sausage, Jumbo Garlic Shrimp, Grilled Veggies and Crispy Smashed Potatoes. They even melted the buyer with a blowtorch!

The service was exceptional from start to finish. Free bread to the table, amazing garlic starter salad, never needed a refill. Prompt and professional! Just what you’d hope to get.

This was one of the best meals I ever had, and I can’t wait to come back. If you’re reading this and trying to pick a spot or make a decision, you would be goofy to not pick Al’s. Amazing!

Complimentary bread was decent, it came warm.
House garlic sauce for garden salad was A+
Sirloin and Rib eye steaks were perfectly cook and delicious.

Al's famous coconut creme pie, was a big disapointment. It was dence and flavourless. Not worth the calories.

Al’s steak is the best. I’ve been eating here for 20 years and it never disappoints.

Service inconsistent, ranging from good to inattentive and forgetful, food very good, atmosphere lovely, keep an eye on your bill, we were double charged for an item! It was later corrected with no issue.

Al’s steakhouse was the first spot for dinner on the Ottawa weekend trip. Our reservation was made the same day for 9pm, happy they had room since it was short notice and the restaurant was basically full when we got there.
Service was great, I believe our servers name was Brandy. She was attentive and well versed in the menu.
For the food, I ended up ordering the filet mignon. It comes with one side and a salad. I ended up ordered the Caesar Salad, which was an upgrade of $5.00. I personally didn’t think that was worth it and just wish I stuck with the standard salad they offer. The steak was ok, I ordered it medium rare, which it was. I just don’t like it super charred on the exterior. For the side, I got mashed potatoes. I thought you had the option between garlic or regular mash. I ended up going with the garlic, but I didn’t really taste any garlic. I also got a side of shrimp, which was good with the steak.
They also bring complimentary bread and pickles to the table.
Overall, I thought the meal was decent. I don’t think it’s worth what you pay for. If I had an option to choose between Al’s or the keg.. I’d probably go to the keg.

This post is about my disappointment on the customer service I received. Al’s is my top restaurant and I have gone for many years and have never had a complaint. I have not been able to go for a couple years now as I could not afford a dinner out.
Recently, I received a large gift certificate from my brother and sister for my Birthday so I could have an amazing night out with my partner without worrying about cost. During a recent move I somehow accidentally misplaced this gift certificate. Devastated is not enough to describe how horrible I feel about this but I have torn my life apart trying to find it.
I thought I will call Al’s to see how they can help or look up if the certificate had been used. I originally was told sorry nothing we can do not even a simple sorry this happened let’s see what I can find out, nothing. I thought that was odd so I emailed Justin and got no response so sent a follow up a couple days later. I got a response from him finally and it was, unfortunately there is nothing we can do. That was it. I took the time to explain the importance of this night out and really thought there was some way to see if it had been used. Basically, there is only about a 1.5 month window that it could have need redeemed if stolen from me. As it is a paper certificate apparently there would be no record. I do find it hard to believe that they could not see in the computer system if anyone paid using this large certificate during this timeframe. With the basic response I believe there was no effort to help me. I realize how much of a pain it could be but Al’s has always been amazing but I thought the lack of care was not normal. I realize I am one little customer in the sea of loyal Al clients but again am disappointed that the response didn’t even have an ‘I am sorry this has happened, let me see what I can do’ nothing just no.
$250 may not mean much to Al’s but it meant the world to me and even though I blame myself I truly thought this day and age would be able to pull up some report.
Note , the rating is 1 for this situation only and no reflection of the meals and service I have always received from Al’s in the past.

**Owner/Justin - regarding your reply. I was not asking for you to replace it at all. The error is mine and I own it. I was simply asking if someone could try a bit harder to see if it had been used or not as I am sure there are records of how people paid. The simple no saying it’s impossible did not seem right and did not sit well. The lack of care and helpfulness to go above and beyond was surprising. Again I was not asking it to be replaced. I clearly stated how much I love and have always received impeccable care.

Had dinner at Als steak house for a birthday party. I was excited to try since never being there before, but unfortunately…It started like this … seated at 620 and didn’t see a server until 700. Bread server dropped an entire salt cup on my appetizer. The male bathroom was disgusting with piss all over the floor and the toilets unapproachable, not really their fault but they should have someone cleaning on a regular. Our entrees didn’t show until an hour and a bit. Then after that people had to leave since it was getting late (we are talking about 930 from 620) and the server double charged us for a bottle of wine on two separate bills… we will never be back and neither will anybody else from that dinner.

Steak and baked potato was great. Fries were uninspired.
Servers were so busy - they were friendly, knowledgeable and polite but it seemed they had too many tables.

We were at Al's last week for dinner with a small group. The restaurant was gorgeous and cozy. The staff was the most friendly. We had a bunch of apps to share- escargot, mussels, mushroom toast etc. We also got the butcher board which was a fantastic platter that was plentiful with the apps for our group of 5. I hadn't tried oysters before and our wonderful server gave me tips with their oil and red wine sauce and I fell in love and have been dreaming of oysters since. This place is a true gem. So happy to have experienced the service here!

The decor is elegant and modern and spacy and that is all good. The steak is also cooked to perfection, and the service excellent. That is also all good. So why the three stars? Because the restaurant goes cheap with everything BUT the steak. The salad dressing tastes as if it comes from a plastic bail they purchased at Wholesale Foods ... which they probably did. The mushrooms to accompany the steak are of the cheapest kind. It is like they decided to keep their steaks perfect and don't care about the rest.
