Planet Coffee, ByWard Market, Ottawa

Went in today for a coffee and muffin and it was just ok. The coffee here is always good, so that’s solid. The rest is hit or miss. Sometimes the staff are warm and friendly, but today they were cold and a bit passive aggressive. No thank you, no smile. When I asked if a decaf americano on the counter was mine, I was told in a passive aggressive way that if it didn’t look like mine, it wasn’t mine. Not the best way to start when you’re about to sit down and enjoy something you paid for. The baked goods are also inconsistent. Sometimes decent, sometimes stale. Cakes I’ve tried have been pretty hard. Overall, fine if you’re not picky and just want whatever comes your way.

I ordered iced coffee and a sandwich, it was alright.. due to construction no outdoor patio is available.. indoor atmosphere is like any other cafe.. nothing special..

Honestly, horrid. The blueberry cheesecake was like a rock. We couldn't figure out if it wasn't fully defrosted or just 10 days old. The lemon square was 90% crust and 10% lemon, obviously done so to save costs. There were a ton of flies and bees (not even near the display, but by the seats, which is weird). Oh, and they don't advertise the prices of their baked goods, which I find dishonest.

Okay, I’m honestly just shocked. I’ve been here before and ordered coffee, and their small size was never this small. I’m not sure if it’s just the matcha that comes in this tiny cup, but the portion is seriously surprising. Maybe it’s on me for not asking about the sizes beforehand, but for $5.80, I definitely expected a standard small, like the one you get at most coffee shops. The taste is okay but matcha feels kinda diluted, but this serving size is really disappointing. (59 mL sanitizer bottle for reference)

I work close by. Great spot to grab a coffee or a bite. Recommended.

Great location, but everything else is just alright. I’ve been coming here for years because of the location and that’s probably what makes it popular. Coffee was fine. Avocado toast was overpriced for what it was.

The rhubarb bar was amazing, I would order the cherry mint soda again; the latte was a little bitter

Unfortunately the latte was maybe one of the worst lattes I’ve had from an independent coffee shop. But worst were the bathrooms. I’m not sure how they could be that dirty at 8:30 on a Wednesday. The toilet paper dispenser doesn’t work at all, need to shred the toilet paper or use paper towel. No coat hook.

Tucked away, excellent, unique & homemade-looking pastries, ginger cookie, pumpkin square, cheesecake, good coffee, hot chocolate & usually can find a spot to sit.

I used to like this spot. Plenty of small tables and not too many wifi moochers loitering around. Good drinks.

But there are too many laptop jockeys here now. Can you do your graduate thesis or your coding or your bad poetry in private like everyone else guys?

Planet coffee is abnormally busy and always packed with people just chilling there on any time of the day. It has a cozy area in the Byward area-ally ish vibe. The drinks are fantastic and the food are interesting such as the creme cheese brownie and the espresso brownie
