The food was good, it was my first time trying Malatang and it was delicious but the price is kinda expensive compared to other places in Canada… but that’s Canada… sooooo for Ottawa, we’re blessed to have the Soup Fairy’s Malatang! Load your bowl with your ingredients of choice, choose your broth and enjoy the flavours of your creation.

definitely worth a try if you’re in town and craving it

Sad to hear they're closing. Soup fairy brought a unique experience to the market.
The environment was chic, the food selection process was fun, clear, and clean and the food was flavourful, lacked a bit of heat, but still delicious.
I would love for something similar to open soon (maybe with slightly better pricing) as they will be missed!
They're leaving a malatang shaped hole in the heart of the ByWard market!

Dropped by for dinner service and it was completely empty at prime dinner time. Malatang, the food served here is basically hotpot in a bowl. You select what you want and choose your soup base.

Pros:
- Lots of seating, clean tongs and clean bowls
- Service was friendly
- Got free ramen noodles which was nice
- Everything was cooked properly, not overcooked or under cooked.

Cons:
- Most of the vegetables were wilted/turning brown. Meats were dry, and looked quite old, especially the thin sliced meats which were no longer in rolls, melted and in a ripped apart/unappetizing state.
- Quite a few ingredients were very low/not available.
- Availability of fresh ingredients at the dipping sauce bar were not great. Cilantro was browning/turning mushy, and all of it was wilted, same thing with the green onion. There was barely any garlic left and bottles/spoons were dirty or oily.
- Broths we had were quite bland (spicy and sour, tomato and house spicy), my personal broth, spicy and sour was neither spicy or sour which was disappointing.

Overall, it was a bit disappointing and underwhelming. We saw a lot of positive reviews for it on social media, but coming here, we were disappointed with the poor quality of ingredients and below average taste.

Next time I visit, I hope to see them swap out and keep an eye on the ingredients available so customers can choose and select fresh ingredients in the future and have more a flavorful soup base.

Stale food and bad service. I highly recommend this store. One of the six quail eggs was not sour. If you want to eat delicious food, you must come here. It’s so sophisticated, the quail eggs are all from 1982

Loved discovering this place through an Instagram account that showcases local Ottawa eateries. Although we had never ate at a place like this "build your own hotpot", it was straight forward to grab a large bowl and use the provided tongs for picking your ingredients. Your bowl is weighed and you choose from 1 of 4 soup bases to be added to your chosen fixings while it's cooked. We felt it was good value and greatly enjoyed our meals. It was a nice quiet environment, the staff were attentive to filling our water glasses, and we left our bowls on the table when we were done as the staff clear the tables frequently. I can't wait to return with my husband and show him how good of a spot it is!??

Beef noodle soup was very good. Big portions and chewy noodles! Beef could be cooked a little longer but still very good overall!

A unique soup experience. Patrons craft their own bowls from a variety of fresh ingredients, then choose from a selection of flavorful broths. The process is simple: fill your bowl, weigh your ingredients, select your broth, and enjoy. With options catering to diverse dietary needs and preferences, everyone can indulge. The result is a harmonious blend of flavors that's both delicious and satisfying. Whether for a quick lunch or a cozy meal with friends, they deliver a soup-sational experience.

Incredible! The curry fish balls were so good. Super customizable, you get to pick all of your toppings, vegetables, noodles, etc… absolutely loved it. I recommend the lemongrass tom yum soup option!

They are not what they were when they first opened anymore. I personally stopped going since 2023 after several kitchen incidents based on other review.
