I used to visit this spot when I craved Hong Kong-style flavours—here’s my take:

Great variety of soup bases—most soup taste quite authentic

Must-try soups: Original Fish Soup and Pepper Fish Soup

Add Fish Fillet for a great pairing if you're into seafood

Personal favourite: Szechuan Spicy Soup with Fish Fillet
(Heads up: spice level is medium-high and not adjustable)

Drinks: Pretty good selection, there are milk tea, lemon tea, etc.

Toppings: unfortunately mostly frozen meats and ingredients, with a few exceptions and the Enoki mushroom portion was a bit too small when I ordered it.

Side dishes are decent and worth trying, but not standouts.

Interior, Seating, Lighting, Pricing:
Affordable and casual, with a Hong Kong-style noodle shop vibe
Comfortable for solo diners or small groups
Not ideal for large groups—the space isn’t very big

Overall Value and Tips
If you’re craving a fish broth noddles, this place delivers. Some soup bases are surprisingly authentic for the price. Just expect a more no-frills experience with mostly frozen ingredients.

Tried it already? Let me know which soup base is your favourite—or what toppings you always go for!

Classic HK food spot. Enjoyable and lots of options. Not expensive

I’ve been a regular customer since this restaurant opened at its current location. I called to place my order in Mandarin, as I know the staff speak the language. During the call, I also confirmed there would be a 5% discount for paying in cash. If coins were not an acceptable form of payment, the staff could have clarified this at that time.

When I arrived to pick up my order around 7 PM on May 16, 2025, I paid $20 in coins (ten $1 coins, one $2 coin, and the rest in quarters), which I had carefully counted at home to assist the cashier. The staff member appeared visibly displeased, questioned why I had so many coins, and shook her head while counting them, a process that took less than a minute. She then asked me, in both Mandarin and English, “Did you come back from China recently?” and repeated the same question. I was shocked, as the question felt irrelevant and inappropriate. I replied in English: “I’ve paid here using notes before. I received change in coins, so I saved them and used them today. This has nothing to do with China.”

I found this interaction inappropriate and alienating. Although the staff member may be from Hong Kong, I believe such comments carry a discriminatory undertone, particularly in a restaurant that serves many Mandarin-speaking customers. I would also like to point out that Mandarin is spoken not only in China, but also by many people from countries like Malaysia and Singapore. Toronto is a diverse and inclusive city, and I hope the restaurant takes this feedback seriously to foster a respectful and welcoming environment for all guests, especially given that many of your customers speak Mandarin and may come from a variety of backgrounds.

The portions are huge & worth it for the price, the popcorn chicken and free milk tea included with my meal were both amazing 👍

I look forward to dining at Deer Garden after work, alone or with friends. I've also recommended many of my clients to come by after their appointments with me.

The food is delicious and affordable. Never have to wait for too long for food and arrives piping hot. The serving size is generous too.

The staff are the best! They're always polite, kind, courteous and quick to help you. Even when the place is packed and many customers are impatient and rude to them. They do their utmost to provide impeccable service!

Highly recommended!

One of the waitress had a horrible attitude and acted like I owe her my food money. Like honestly at such a high price for apparently mediocre food I’d expect better service than that!

Steer away.

Watch out what’s in the noodles. Last two times I ate in this restaurant, I found hair and baby cockroach in the soup I ordered.

I had rice noodle in parsley & century egg fish soup with beef briskets and cuttlefish this time. The fish soup base is always consistent and savoury. Their beef briskets had a deep beef flavour and very tender which is my favourite. I also like their cuttlefish too. It’s tender and firm but I feel thirsty after drinking the soup. I would like to try their Hainan chicken rice and I hope they’ll still have 5% discount for cash payment.

Watch out, we ordered chicken and what we received didn't look or taste like chicken. It was tough and undercooked. Service is lousy. I should have checked the reviews before going there. Never going back.

Consistently good soup noodles. I like that I can custom make what I like and I generally get the same thing but it's always the same and good. Very satisfying on a cold day. Service is quite quick, my drink and noodles came pretty fast. Pay at the counter. 5% off for cash.

Very much a Hong Kong cafe style eatery. Specialty is noodles in a fish soup base. Don't let this put you off. The soup is sweet, clean and not fishy at all.
Ordering is simple, pick soup base, toppings and style of noodles. Add drink. All for $17.99.
I went for the tomato and pumpkin fish soup, with fish slices and king oyster mushrooms, on rice noodles. The soup is definitely the star. Sweet and rich in umami. I drank most of it, even though I was pretty full.
I also had the Hong Kong style milk tea, probably the best I've had outside of Hong Kong.. definitely not the instant stuff. It was rich, creamy and intense.
Service was fast.
The atmosphere is very reminiscent of cafes in Hong Kong.

Tried the hainan chicken which tasted authentic compared to what I had in Singapore. The fish noodle soups are always delicious. A long wait though at lunch time.
