Alo

Alo 163 Spadina Ave., Toronto Bar • $$$$

“Compared to some of the other fine dining experiences I’ve tried, Alo is an amazing experience, but I do believe that there are a lot better alternatives based on the food, experience, and price you’re expected to pay. Based on the worn out seats, small glasses of wine, getting sick after eating there, and all the meal upgrades they offer in the beginning, it does kind of feel like they may put profits above all else - but I sincerely hope that this isn’t the case.

4/5 stars for the food - and for a few reasons. Firstly, like one of the newer reviews below me had mentioned, I did feel sick the very next day after dining here. My partner felt fine but it took about two full days for me to fully recover. I’m not sure if there was something about the ingredients they used or if it was something related to their food handling but I hope that this is something they look into.

In terms of the food itself, there were several highlight dishes that made up for some of the ones that weren’t as memorable. We also opted for a caviar upgrade for one of the dishes, but unfortunately, I felt like the dish would have been just as fine without it.

Other than that, our sommelier was amazing and took us on a journey with each and every glass that we had. He was very knowledgeable and passionate about each wine, and the parings definitely elevated each dish we had. However, compared to other wine parings I’ve experienced, the amount of wine we were given was a lot smaller in comparison. But even then, I still wouldn’t miss out on the parings!

During service, I found the waiters to be very attentive and very natural. It’s very easy for establishments like these to feel a little robotic but I didn’t feel that way at all.

In terms of the actual dining establishment itself, the leather sofas felt a little sticky & could use a good reupholstering. Besides that, the rest of the establishment felt very clean and comfortable.

We also found a few mistakes on our takeaway cards as well. For one, I was provided with the wrong wine list and my partner’s name was spelled incorrectly - which had a special happy birthday greeting inside. At this price point, there should be a certain degree of care and attention to each customer & there shouldn’t be any mistakes like these at all.

Overall, my partner and I had an amazing experience at Alo but based on the price point, I do believe that there are other establishments that exceed the experience we had at Alo. Nevertheless, all of these misses could be easily improved on and I hope to be back again with a much better experience!!

Parking: I ended up parking at an underground Green P nearby (2 minute walk).”

“I have mixed feelings writing this review. We placed a reservation and when we came inside, we believed we would be seated almost immediately. However, we stood in the entrance for around 10 minutes unnoticed. Once we finally got seated, we were all ready to place our orders(we looked at the menu online) and we told our server we were ready and he just walked away. He came back around 10 minutes later and took our orders. Food came around 40 minutes later. The quality of the food was good, and the taste was excellent for most dishes(compliments to the chef). We ordered a trout dish and when it came looking like salmon we asked the server if we had gotten the wrong dish and he told us that it was trout and walked away again. After some extensive googling we learned that it was in fact steelhead trout(flavor & appearance very similar to salmon). We wished that he took the time to explain it to us. Overall a decent spot, but our evening was ruined by the poor service.”

“Planta, the vegan restaurant, exceeded all expectations during my recent dining experience. From the moment I stepped inside, I was greeted with a warm and inviting atmosphere that perfectly complemented the restaurant’s commitment to sustainability and plant-based cuisine. The menu at Planta is a true masterpiece, offering a wide array of innovative and flavorful dishes that cater to both vegans and non-vegans alike. The creativity and attention to detail in each dish are truly commendable. I started with their zesty avocado tartare, which was a burst of fresh flavors that left my taste buds. What truly sets Planta apart, though, is their commitment to sustainability and ethical sourcing. Knowing that every ingredient on my plate was not only delicious but also environmentally conscious added an extra layer of satisfaction to my meal. Chotto Matte Toronto 161 Bay St., Toronto Japanese • $$$$

“Chotto Matte is a must try. The food was absolutely amazing. The Amazonian salmon is a culinary masterpiece, the wagyu beef gyoza magnificent, the tempura shrimp were amazing with the sauce provided, while the spicy chicken karaage wasn’t great flavor wise the texture was a bit off putting it was perfectly crunchy on the outside but a bit slimy on the inside, the pineapple pomegranate duck breast was delicious - extremely flavorful, though we were not a fan of the pork and shrimp gyoza they eagerly replaced them with another wagyu beef gyoza. The service is outstanding. The wait staff and busser were extremely attentive, our water glasses didn’t stay empty long the moment they notices they refilled without prompting and finished plates were removed from the table.”

For $100 dollars, it blew me away. The fish were good quality and I had nothing to be mad about. There was even a toro piece which is my personal favourite. They didn’t have any uni pieces when I went.

Interior was great and I had no complaints about the service. I would give this restaurant a 8.5/10!”

“Great staff and great pizza to match. The variety of toppings on the menu is just right and they have all the basics to be a cult favorite

Picked up a medium sized Specialty Pizza to-go but was way too hungry to wait until I got home. Long story short, along my 20 minute walk, 6 slices were consumed unapologetically.

The ingredients were fresh. Brownie points for halal meats. Ihtesham, the guy running the show at the store, is an absolute gem. He took some time to chat with me about his story and ambitions for Cosmic. With the stuff theyre serving here, I'm sure this place has a place in Toronto's hall of fame.”
