We ordered chicken plates with rice, salad, potatoes. It was unbelievably tasty. The rice was seasoned perfectly! The salad was dressed to perfection, and the chicken was so good.

“I'm very happy to find this little hidden gem right beside my workplace. I'm on a ketogenic diet, so all I really need is a bunch of meat, protein, and a basic salad with garlic sauce and tahini. I also need it to be sugar‑free to fit within my lifestyle, and this place has absolutely delivered. It's pretty affordable, and the meat portion is very generous. I found my new favorite place. I do think that tahini and garlic might need a little bit more salt, but other than that, I'm very satisfied with the quantity of food relative to the price and the ratio.

I first walked into their original location years ago in the humble plaza on Overlea Boulevard in Thorncliffe Park (East York). Back then it was a modest, no-frills Afghan family spot serving the flavours of home to a growing community. The air was filled with the scent of perfectly marinated meats sizzling on the grill, fresh naan, and that unmistakable warmth of Afghan hospitality. It felt like stepping into someone’s living room rather than a restaurant. That first visit left a lasting impression—the kind that makes you keep coming back.

Today, Bamiyan Kabob has blossomed into one of the most beloved Afghan restaurant chains across the Greater Toronto Area, with locations stretching from East York to Markham, Mississauga, North York, Pickering, Maple, Oakville and beyond. Through it all, they have stayed true to their roots: authentic recipes, generous portions, and that same family-run spirit. Named after the historic Bamyan region of Afghanistan (famous for its ancient Buddhas and Silk Road heritage), the restaurant carries the flavours and traditions of Afghanistan with pride, bringing them to tables all over the GTA without ever diluting what made them special in the first place.

This evening I found myself at their Markham location at 7760 Markham Road (right around Markham Road and 14th Avenue). The place is clean, spacious, and welcoming—exactly the kind of family-friendly spot where you can settle in comfortably. Everything felt well-maintained and inviting.

I ordered the Mantoo (also spelled Mantu), and it was pure comfort. These traditional Afghan steamed dumplings are little parcels of joy: delicate thin dough wrapped around a savoury filling of seasoned ground meat and onions, then steamed until tender. They arrive crowned with a cool, garlicky yogurt sauce and a bright tomato-based topping, often finished with a sprinkle of dried mint. Every bite is soft, fragrant, and deeply satisfying—the kind of dish that tastes like celebration and home at the same time. Mantoo has roots that stretch across Central Asia (related to the broader family of manti dumplings that travelled along ancient trade routes), but the Afghan version is uniquely its own: elegant, balanced, and made with care. At Bamiyan it was executed beautifully—plump, flavourful, and truly yummy. Paired with their house sauce, it made for a perfect meal.

What I love most is how welcoming Bamiyan Kabob remains for everyone. Families with kids, couples, solo diners, groups of friends, people of every age and background—all feel at home here. The food is halal, the portions generous, the atmosphere relaxed, and the flavours authentic enough to transport you while still being approachable for anyone trying Afghan cuisine for the first time.

From that first visit at the original Overlea location to tonight’s Mantoo in Markham, Bamiyan Kabob has been a constant source of deliciousness and connection. If you’re looking for genuine Afghan hospitality, perfectly prepared kabobs, and comforting classics like Mantoo in a clean, friendly setting, this Markham Road location (and the whole family of Bamiyan restaurants) is a must.
