Extremely rude staff! I overheard the staff speaking negatively about their customers. One of them in particular was heavily complaining and criticizing customers. She specifically said “they have mental health issues. That’s why the come here.” I find this extremely problematic. People who work at a store like this should not have the view that people who shop there are “crazy”! If anything, herbal and natural medicine is something to be admired. I tried to empathize with her because customer service jobs are hard, but she should not be working there in the first place, let alone say this in front of customers. I used to work at a health food store too and I would’ve never said that about my customers. They should hire people who admire natural medicine. That conversation should NOT have happened ESPECIALLY within earshot of other customers! The employee should probably get a different job. It left an extremely bad taste in my mouth, and I left. Take your money elsewhere. I just read some of the other reviews and noticed some other people noticed similar things. I’d recommend Baldwin Naturals or if you can go a little farther I highly recommend Nature’s Emporium by Union Station.

I purchased Attune lions mane mushroom at Essence of Life because I read about the great benefits. I add a teaspoon of the lions mane powder to my coffee or matcha in the morning and it is fantastic. Within an hour you really notice a boost in focus and alertness; it really works! Highly recommend to anyone who has a long work day ahead.
Essence of Life is a family-owned business and is located in Kensington Market amongst a handful of shops. The staff are really knowledgeable. They have a large variety of products (more than most health stores) in the store and you can pretty much find any health food you need. They even have beauty products, frozen foods and rare imported foods that are hard to find anywhere in the city.

I really like shopping here. Great selection and very fair prices (well, for this economy anyways). Tutti Frutti has lower prices overall and Essence has a much larger selection. They're very close to each other; between these two and the og fruit market right across the street you really can get everything you need on god I love Kensington

Product catalogue, amazing. Hired staff, great…. the family staff, not so much. I finally experienced the “poor customer experience” that so many ppl in my community have warned me about over the past 10-15yrs. To be honest, I only went there twice since Little Green Planet moved to Scarborough last year. I guess I’ll be spending $10 in gas to be treated like a human being from now on. I’ll also be referring my family and friends to Tutti Fruitti until this establishment changes owners (again).

I walk in holding my emotional support chihuahua on my arms, as soon as stepping in the girl working there came to us saying we don’t allow dogs! I was about to open my bag to show her the card but she refused to even see it as she claimed they don’t even allow emotional support dogs!!! I could have called and complained about them but leaving a google review hurts them more.

Great health food store with a lot of great products. Supplements, frozen foods, beauty products this place has everything. Essence of Life has a much better selection of products than many of the bigger health food stores I’ve visited. The staff are friendly and willing to help you find the items you’re looking for. Highly recommend checking this place out.

More often than not I come to Kensington specifically for Essence of Life. They have such a wide variety of health conscious goods. Its a great place if you are vegan, gluten free or have dietary restrictions. I discover something new every time I come in. I recently discovered this mango Tajin sauce, which I had never seen before and needed to try. 10/10 its delicious as a sauce for eggs or anything but I also added it to my spicy margaritas - and omg total game changer!! The staff are super friendly and knowledgeable. This place is definitely worth checking out if you are in Kensington market.
