Great vibes with the retro looks, the place is legendary and the service is more than ok. But the food is not that great. Anything I had fried tastes burnt. The fried rice tasted bad. The wontons were way over cooked. The egg roll was frankly gross. The main dishes have been ok, I've had general Tso chicken, spare ribs and chow mein over my three visits and each time left unimpressed. Doubt there will be a fourth visit.

I ordered Cantonese chow mein as takeout. I've eaten in the restaurant before. It's better to order the more authentic Chinese dishes, rather than chicken balls etc. It's the only Chinese place in the Beaches, and a gift as far as takeout. The prices are great.

Day old rice is not acceptable. You can get very sick eating old rice. It should be made fresh everyday and I just spent $40 and my beef fried rice was made with old rice (hard, cold, clumped together..) I wouldn't recommend this place. Even though its cheap, you can still find better for the price.

I don’t get the hype, food was pretty much inedible. Ordered their best rated dishes. Chicken balls were 90 % dough and the sauce tasted like dish soap. Lo mein was boiled into oblivion and was just mush. Egg rolls were 100% bean sprouts and tasted unwashed. The only saving grace was the garden gate beef and white rice, and the packaging of the order.

I'm sitting here on Christmas day waiting for my order to finish and all the customers are coming up and hugging the owners as if they've known them for years I haven't tried the food yet because I'm taking it home but I asked the other people here and everyone's giving it a high rating as for the service in the atmosphere those stars are mine

The gem of the Beaches. No clue how this isn't more reviewed. I defy you to find a better price:quality ratio in Toronto.

Guys… I don’t write reviews but the food here is actually so bad. If I save one person from it I’ll be happy. I ordered the diner for one and let me tell you… the sauce on the chicken balls tasted like dishwasher fluid and the rice was so burnt it tasted like grandma’s ashes. I had such low expectations because it’s cheap but I figured the place was cute and reviews were good so how bad could it be. Just trust me please.

The Goof!

Classic Beaches landmark.

Great if you’re catching a movie across the street at The Fox Theatre or want to people watch along Queen E.

The food is mostly a hit. Occasionally a miss. But it brings back a lot of family memories. Especially nice as my mother grew up in the area and can still recall it opening in the 1950’s!

Even I remember back in the 80’s or 90’s when each table had a mini jukebox.

Portions and pricing is fair. Have only ever had chinese food so can’t speak to the other section of the menu.

Pictured are a couple of combos for 1 and a general tso chicken.

An excellent Chinese restaurant with very friendly and welcoming staff. I highly recommend the chicken balls, they are the best in the city.

I've eaten here before, and I'm going to say yesterday was (I hope) not typical. Ordered a set meal for 4. The stir-fries were bland and overcooked, the meat pretty tasteless. Too much breading on the shrimp. And there was a DEAD WASP in one of our dishes. I think he might have died from eating it. I would have to think hard about going back to Garden Gate.

Good food at great prices. If you show up with those expectations, you'll leave happy. I just with the would takedown the covid era plastic barriers, they really hurt the vibe.
