I tried Iwami based on all the great reviews, and left very disappointed.

First off, it’s not obvious on their website that they’re not a standalone restaurant, but rather one of many in a loud communal space called Chefs Hall. The area they do have is small and you’re squished if you sit at the bar.

The food was not up to my standards. The spicy mayo was not spicy, and both the spicy mayo and the soy sauce were kind of sweet. The ginger and wasabi are both weak in flavour, so even trying to punch up my bite with those didn’t work.

I had the Kazan roll and it was okay. I also had the Dragon roll. It says there’s a chipotle sauce on it but I didn’t taste any kind of smoky heat that chipotle usually offers. Probably because the teriyaki was also sweet so it masked everything. The seared salmon on top was not my favourite flavour, but that’s not Iwami’s fault. It’s just a preference thing. Lastly, this roll has a slimy texture with all of the sauces and stuff. I didn’t finish this roll.

This has nothing to do with the competency of the staff. The rolls were built well and quickly. But the recipes and suppliers of their components need to be re-evaluated.

Based on the food and atmosphere alone, I would not go back.

Went here for my birthday with my grandma.
There is a japanese bar-like ambiance that is very cozy and comfortable to be in.

We ordered a lot, staff was extremely friendly, service was fast and very high quality despite the large volume of people during that time.

The food is to die for, everything is beautifully crafted, tastes amazing, and definitely stands out from all the sushi restaurants I’ve been to.

The type of food you get full with but don’t feel heavy afterwards!

One of the best meals we’ve had in North America - not just for the food that beats some of the michelin one stars but the friendliness of the place and everything about the experience from the quirky decor to the passionate yet respectful chef Tommy :)

Can really tell the care & work that’s behind each of their creation and it’s not just another food business. The dishes have a soul and everything we had was consistent in creativity and quality.

We were mindblown by the yuzu compressed watermelon (last day on the menu tho so don’t look for it if you go now), the miso eggplant was a must get - the bf loved it despite hating eggplants.
The beets with sake cream was another surprise - do give it a try even if you don’t like beets!
The smoked salmon and toro nigiris used better quality fish than what you can find in a lot of omakases in SF.

And the octopus/brussel sprouts/potato dish was another favorite - never had octopus this good before ?

And chef Tommy explained each dish to us and the preparation (because we were interested not because he was pretentious) and made us feel so welcomed.

In summary, super creative, high quality, yet genuine and unpretentious:) we’ll be back to try more before we leave Toronto!

We came here on a whim to eat one evening during our stay, then made the detour on purpose to come back! Excellent miso soup, excellent quality cuisine, fast service and as a bonus the boss speaks French ? if I come back to Toronto I hope to find Iwami!

Freshest and tastiest sushi I’ve had in Toronto! The people that work there are also so helpful and friendly! My favourites are the spicy salmon, dragon and unagi aburi. Highly recommend checking them out!

UBON CARBONARA is to die for!! Found this spot in Chef's Hall via google reviews and so thankful I did. The service was excellent, price was right, portion was great and this entree was incredible. Perfect in every way. Additionally, I ordered the avocado maki and aburi shrimp/salmon sushi which were also very good and super fresh. This spot is closed on Sundays. I really cannot wait to return. It was amazing!!
