Have always liked this no frills, have been coming here for 10+ years. But the meat section can’t be trusted, the Charlie’s meat that operates in the no frills often sells meat that smells spoiled, the fridges also go down all the time. The other meat section (from no frills) often serves up questionable cuts as in “Mislabeled meats”, spent 20$ for boneless skinless chicken thighs the other day and got a bunch of deboned chicken drumsticks, this isn’t the first time this has happened. The drumsticks are lined with tough stringy tendons and would have been maybe 7-8$ at most and a pain to clean.
I initially rated Mike's 5-stars many years ago when I moved into the neighborhood, however, my latest shopping experience has left me seething at Loblaws corporate, the Franchise Owner.
The store is on my way home from work and I will routinely stop by to pick up several small items to complete my dinner for the evening. On Saturday, I entered to purchase an avocado and proceeded to the checkout where a polite cashier welcomed me. She rung me up and, before confirming my payment method, asked me what I had in my tote bag. I replied that they are groceries from another store. She then demanded that I produce a receipt proving my claim. Knowing the law, which I will explain shortly, I politely replied with a "No, I won't" and proceeded to explain to her that she can not ask people this question. She called her Cashier Supervisor, who insisted that store employees, as well as, Store Security have this right. She also mentioned that if Store Security was present, they could prevent me from leaving the store.
I asked to speak to the acting Manager. He arrived, repeated the same. I explained to him, along with the cashier and her Supervisor the following (and this IS the law, not corporate and Franchise owner claptrap):
Unless a line of sight is kept on you for the duration of your shopping experience, and I mean literally every movement you make throughout the store has be uninterrupted even for one second, the store's employees and security staff CAN NOT ask to inspect your bags (tote, backpack, purse, suitcase, etc), inspect your jacket or clothing that you are wearing; they CAN NOT ask for you to produce a receipt for proof of payment from another retailer; they CAN NOT physically detain you and prevent you from leaving the store.
They CAN, if they have a full unobstructed view of you allegedly stealing, prevent you from leaving the store BUT that can ONLY be done by the Security Guard (and the only Security Guard that can physically stop you are the ones wearing Kevlar chest protectors or other Kevlar clothing).
I am in NO WAY upset with the workers. They should not be the front line of preventing thefts in the store. Loblaws corporate along with Mike, rather than search out and implement better anti-theft initiatives, have chosen to burden their grossly underpaid staff - Here is a FACT: Every employee at Mike's No Frills is paid well below the living wage for Toronto. While he and Loblaws reap in record sales and profits year on year, they throw their hard working staff into difficult situations.
Cashiers are meant to cash out customers, NOT put themselves in a position to accuse people of stealing. Beginning the encounter assuming the customer is a suspected thief is a terrible business practice.
THE BURDEN OF PROOF IS ON THE RETAILER!!!
The staff members did tell me that theft at the store is out of control. As much as I empathize with this situation, implementing a policy where customers have to prove their innocence is illegal and capriciously stupid.
I work in food retail and know ALL of the legal parameters regarding engaging customers in all types of scenarios, ESPECIALLY theft as it is the biggest headache for stores to deal with and figure out.
From Michael Bryant, Executive Director of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association:
"The ‘shopkeepers privilege,’ as it’s known in the case law, came about from shoplifting cases, but arguably it’s only triggered when a crime is witnessed. In other words, the shopkeepers privilege is exercised after a theft is witnessed, not in anticipation of an imagined crime. That privilege says that shopkeepers can detain someone until the police arrive. After witnessing a theft, a shopkeeper can invite the customer to search the bag together with the shopkeeper. But the shopkeeper has no right to search without consent."
Rude and terrible cashier 😡😡😡
The best store. It opens early, closes late and you can buy everything there. Very convenient. Thank you for taking care of your customers.
Have been shopping in the store for 4 years and the customer service there is nonexistent. Store employees are poorly mannered, they never greet customers, aren’t helpful when you’re trying to find certain items, cashiers look hostile and speak in a rude manner, ignore customers. Today a cashier has refused to do his job and help me (after I, and other people in the line have been waiting for 10 minutes) because the store was closing at 9pm and it was 8:53pm. When I go and wait for the cashier to help me I expect to be helped by them, so I asked him nicely, if he could still help me since I’ve been waiting and only had 2 items. He replied in a disrespectful manner that he’s going home and closing the cash register, and sent me to the self check out, which also had a lineup. I pointed out that it’s not 9pm yet, to which he aggressively yelled “are you my boss?! You’re not my boss!!! Do you want to be my boss?? Go to the self checkout!!”
That is not acceptable. Dear No Frills manager, please train your employees on how to properly interact with customers. Furthermore, if the store is open until 9pm and there are customers inside even past the time, you are still obligated to help them, and not just send them to the self checkout.
Good open store.
Fantastic grocery store/produce
Don’t go here. Food is over priced and low quality. Girl at self check makes you feel like a thief. Insulted and disgusted!
Large NoFrills with great selection; tons of free parking outside. Also, selling wine, beer and cider. Stock up now!
Prices go up and stock variety goes down. I have visited every week for 2 years and for the last MONTH they have had no PC salted top crackers which incidentally at $3.00! Is are the CHEAPEST crackers they carry even more than the no name brand. The same goes for the $1.97 english muffins, always seem to be out but they always have plenty of their super expensive alternative brand which they ALSO own. Every trip I return with less and less as they seem to stop carrying anything that is a good price while continuing to hike up their prices.
The self checkouts are a nightmare with their adding of scales which repeatedly don’t read the products which makes everything take forever. Good luck trying to get the attention of the barley conscious staff to help when you need it, I have never left this store without feeling frustrated in months.

In our community's time of need, Mike and his team has demonstrated kindness and compassion as we at St. Anne's rebuild and caring on with our community dinners to support each other and those who are struggling.
The church I volunteer at burned to the ground last week. We decided that despite everything going on we needed to provide our monthly dinner for the homeless on June 16. We needed bread to make sandwiches. I went to my local No Frills and saw Victor who offered sympathy, hugs and a 200.00 gift certificate. He and Linda were amazing. They were compassionate, caring and showed what community was all about. In theses days of anger and frustration this store came forward and donated, without question, their time and their services. Their kindness will not be forgotten. Thank you.
I have been shopping here ever since they opened. Overall a great store and great deals at times. But over the last few weeks I have purchased some pre packaged meats. Once without noticing the chicken breast best before date was the same day I purchased it. The second time butterfly pork chops still with one the best before date. But both were slightly slimy and had a slight odour. Not sure what has been happening but this trend it disconcerting. Hope the store is not taking a turn for the worse. Also the new price labels on the shelves are more difficult to read and some are in difficult positions to even see especially for my parents who also frequent the store.
Your website says you are open Victoria Day but you are actually closed. Frustrating that I relied our your website being correct.
My favourite no frills in the city.. I come here once in a while specifically for meat. The butcher dept. staff are always so pleasant and always ready to help you.
