I’m not sure I can justify spending 20 bucks on just a sandwich of this calibre, somehow more cream cheese than salmon, not even a warm or soft bagel. Not sure where the metric is on the other reviews of this spot, but maybe the struggle is that high for finding value in this area. Might give the pastrami a try next time to see if it can redeem this sandwich shop. The cream cheese nor the salmon have a ton of distinct taste.

I wish I could leave a better review but unfortunately I’ve had more than one bad experience with food quality. Yes, the bagels themselves are fresh and delicious, the service in the shop is friendly, and the atmosphere is warm and nostalgic however, I’ve had a couple bad experiences regarding food safety/quality both in person and on Uber Eats and feel compelled to share. On one occasion when ordering on uber eats, the egg salad tasted truly rancid. I called the restaurant to explain this ask when it was prepared and it had been prepared 4-5 days. No apology or offer to remedy the situation. I’ve also ordered a couple lox bagels where the lox made my throat tingle which is rare but can happen when fish is improperly stored. Even the cream cheese in the container smells off long before the Best Buy date. I worry that Schmaltz is overstretching its food storage limits. At this point, I’d stick to ordering their bagels and babka only…

My girlfriend and I had lunch here on a Saturday afternoon at Schmaltz. She had been here before and wanted to bring me for some fresh bagel sandwiches. They did not disappoint. The shop is tucked around the corner of Dupont and Howland. The bagel shop itself is pretty small but the owners have some good things going on in here!

My girlfriend made her own sandwich with Novalox, cucumbers, scallion cream cheese on a sesame bagel. She had no notes for her sandwich. It came to around $24.

I had the Klutz sandwich with the hot smoked turkey, scallion cream cheese, mustard and pickles on an everything bagel. It was huge and super tasty!! The bagel was soft and the hot deli meat was tasty and fresh. It came to around $23.

The two people that served us were very kind, specifically the man behind the cash register - he was chatty and sweet! Made our experience too notch!

At the back, they have a cute little heated patio with big wooden tables where we were able to sit! I would love to come back in the summer to see their outdoor garden patio!!

I'm still dreaming of this bagel. Can't wait to go back and try a different one. The person who made our bagels was very helpful and supportive with what we could and should get. No regrets at all! Also, the patio is a really cool area with eclectic decor.

My friend lives around the corner from Schmaltz and we make a point of it every time I visit the city, to grab a bagel breakfast from here. Schmaltz makes the best bagel breakfast sandwiches ever. Their combinations are all very very tasty and definitely come 'fully loaded'. They even have a vegan-topped one that's delicious. Their latkes are also incredible! The only downside is they're pretty expensive..but you get what you pay for! Highly recommend Schmaltz to anyone looking for a great breakfast sandwich on the go!

Was so excited to give this a shot but so disappointed. The sandwich was really stingy in terms of salmon (see photo) and the latke was far from crispy and honestly tasted stale. $4 for that addition is honestly insane.
The babka was also not good - dense and not the greatest quality chocolate.

Seriously one of the most delicious bagels I’ve had. Fresh, flavorful, and perfectly chewy. I’ll definitely be back.

i stormed through the snow and the slush of torontonian december to come and eat schmaltz appetizing and it was very worth it.

the double down latke is an INCREDIBLE invention — the latkes were super thick and dense while crispy at the same time, and the potato-y flavour was strong with a bit of burnt char to it as well. it was LOADEDDD with super CREAMY MILKY and RICH scallion cream cheese that was a bit tangy and a bit acidic and went sooooo well with the perfectly salty smoky salmon and fresh cold juicy onions.

the REUBEN is also MINDBLOWING. it was MASSIVE and absolutely STUFFED with lean slices of meaty savoury pastrami and melted swiss cheese. my favourite part was definitely the challah bread though — the exterior was toasted perfectly crisp but the bread itself was SUPER thick and soft and fluffy and was a bit eggy and a bit sweet and it was PERFECT AND INCREDIBLE. so much better than the stale, thin, unremarkable bread that deli sandwiches usually come on. the mustard was sweet and added a strong pungent kick, and the sandwich was also swimming in a very tangy and sweet russian dressing that balanced out the salty meat well. i added a latke to the sandwich and it was definitely the right move.

the only thing i was disappointed by was the chocolate babka. it tasted quite stale and old, and the dough wasn’t soft at all, it was mostly crunchy. there was a cinnamon sugar coating and it wasn’t too sweet or chocolatey. im wondering if this was an older batch? i’m upset that i didn’t get to try schmaltz’s babka in all its gooey, freshly-baked glory if that’s the case.

also the back patio was basically indoors and it was super cozy and nice.

Be careful about going here. They have mice.

Definitely one of the best bagel spots in Toronto. A bit out of the way, but worth it. Tried the Chazzer but swapped the salmon for Lemon Dill Gravlox—salty, not just from the salmon but also the fish roe, still tasty. NY-style bagel, chewy and delicious. Highly recommend! I’ll come back and try the Maven Bagel.

Back with chazzer again! Try scallion cream cheese and sesame bagel, the sandwich was amazing, but would be better if their staff could listen to customers, they cut my every time when I asked them not to.
